I can confirm that sometimes "bad things" happen when writing, too.
Happened to me a couple of times, but had no time to investigate it
better. Once the corruption was quite severe (had to use reiser's
rebuild-tree) and some files where lost/damaged.

Didn't test w/ an external hub (poor performances when transferring
large amounts of data: from 20+MB/s down to 6-7!), but once happened
when drives were on different controllers (one on the mainboard, the
other on PCI). Both were USB 2.0 .
