hi,

I have been having some trouble getting this quad ethernet card
to work; any help you could provide is greatly appreciated. The card
was purchased at Black Box, which is a computer + electronics supplier
here in Belgium, and the tulip card carries this shop's brand.

After reading the documentation on http://www.scyld.com/network/
and http://www.freelabs.com/~whitis/hardware/quartet.html i have
put together the information i hope will be of assistance in
helping you point me in the right direction.

I'm running (Slackware) Linux kernel 2.4.14 on a Compaq Deskpro,
and i am able to compile the drivers available on scyld.com for this
tulip card (because the ones shipped with the kernel apparently
don't work -- and they produce problems of their own).

Now, i compile tulip.c and pci-scan.c and insmod both .o files in
/etc/rc.inet1 (as specified in the documentation).

IF the Compaq bios has PCI Bus Mastering enabled, then dmesg
shows:
---
tulip.c:v0.93 11/7/2001 Written by Donald Becker <becker@scyld.com>
  http://www.scyld.com/network/tulip.html
eth0: Digital DS21143-xD Tulip rev 65 at 0xc8845000, 00:C0:F6:10:0A:B1,
IRQ 9.
eth0: EEPROM default media type Autosense.
eth0: Index #0 - Media 10baseT (#0) described by a 21142 Serial PHY (2)
block.
eth0: Index #1 - Media 10baseT-FDX (#4) described by a 21142 Serial PHY
(2) block.
eth0: Index #2 - Media 100baseTx (#3) described by a 21143 SYM PHY (4)
block.
eth0: Index #3 - Media 100baseTx-FDX (#5) described by a 21143 SYM PHY
(4) block.
---
and the same thing appears in /var/log/messages.

IF the Compaq bios has PCI Bus Mastering disabled, then dmesg
shows:
---
tulip.c:v0.93 11/7/2001 Written by Donald Becker <becker@scyld.com>
  http://www.scyld.com/network/tulip.html
The PCI BIOS has not enabled the device at 0/112! Updating PCI command
0003->0007.
eth0: Digital DS21143-xD Tulip rev 65 at 0xc8845000, 00:C0:F6:10:0A:B1,
IRQ 9.
eth0: EEPROM default media type Autosense.
eth0: Index #0 - Media 10baseT (#0) described by a 21142 Serial PHY (2)
block.
eth0: Index #1 - Media 10baseT-FDX (#4) described by a 21142 Serial PHY
(2) block.
eth0: Index #2 - Media 100baseTx (#3) described by a 21143 SYM PHY (4)
block.
eth0: Index #3 - Media 100baseTx-FDX (#5) described by a 21143 SYM PHY
(4) block.
---

note the difference on like 3.

However, in -any- case, neither eth1, eth2, or eth3 is available.

my /etc/modules.conf includes:

alias eth0 tulip
alias eth1 tulip
alias eth2 tulip
alias eth3 tulip

the output to tulip-diag, as well as /proc/pci, /proc/interrupts, and
/proc/ioports
are available upon request, because the previous posting i made (which
included
all that information) exceeded the maximum size allowed on this list.

I have also tried to compile tulip.o with -DREVERSE_PROBE_ORDER=1 but no
luck..

Would anyone happen to know a way to get this to work?

Thanks in advance,

Vafa.
