Hi John,

what kernel version are you using ?
  cat /proc/version
There was a bug in versions from about 2.4.19-2.4.22(?)
which was causing my notebook to freeze when plugging
in a pcmcia card. Maybe you face the same problem?
Upgrade to a newer kernel helped in this case....
