Something similar happened here ??? (root-fs -> ext2 -> older than 1 year ->
                                     many crashes) 

  first: tar xzvf mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz
  ....
  rm -r package  -> i/o error

  mount / -o remount,ro 

  e2fsck -f /dev/sda2 (e2fsck 1.18, 11-Nov-1999 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09)
  -> Entry 'abMainWindow.dtd' in
     /usr/src/net/package/chrome/addressbook/locale/en-US (98387) has
     deleted/unused inode 98394.  Clear<y>? yes

     Entry 'abNewCardDialog.dtd' in
     /usr/src/net/package/chrome/addressbook/locale/en-US (98387) has
     deleted/unused inode 98395.  Clear<y>? yes

     ..... 

  the system was on havy load (make -j2 ): 200 \% ...
