The Quantum drives are notorious for being finicky about tagged 
command queueing.  Combine that with the fact that the aic7xxx
driver has been a bit dodgy on SMP systems (though this may have
improved in recent vintages of the driver).  

IF the problem didn't go away when you turned of tagged queueing,
you might want to make sure it's not a physical problem with the
scsi bus (cables/termination).  Over the years, 90% of the SCSI
problems I've encountered ended up being a cabling or termination
issue.  Another 5% were flakey drivers and the rest were simply
a mystery.
