In my measurements, i have discovered that `make -j 2` provides little
or no speed improvements.  `make -j` however, does.
(not the kernel:)
-j 1  32.6 seconds
-j 2  32.7
-j 3  33.6
-j 4  32.8
-j    18.4

Not that i understand why spawning 20 compiles at a time is the only way
to see improvement.
