Thanks for your reply.

I've tried every variation on kernel PCI support with no luck.  

Just to make sure I'm being clear about this, the same system with the
same kernel, only compiled with SMP turned off, works fine.  This
problem appears to be specifically related to using the Quartet
adapters with 2.1 series SMP kernels.
