Subject: Where are the boot messages ?

I have just installed Kernel 2.1.103 on my HP-vectra 6/200 XU and I get some
troubles (system hangs during floppy copy). But my main problem is that I can
find nowhere the boot messages (not in syslog, not in messages).
I am using Debian 2.0 but I am not certain if this this is related.
Has anybody an idea ?
I have read in SMP faq that this system was working with kernel 2.1.78 and I.
Molnar patches. Are these patches included in 2.1.103 ?
