Well, the problem wasn't the kernel, of course.  I didn't put the
"append mem=128M" in my lilo configuration, assuming the "big memory"
patch was in 2.0.31.  Wrong!  

Going from 128M to 64M definitely _did_ adversely effect the swapping
on my machine! :-)

Maybe I'll look for the obvious before complaining to the mailing list
next time!
