I don't think so. I get

#1 Mon Jan 6 10:51:57 MET 1997

on my old 2.0.27 SMP system. Yes, I also have two CPU(s). And yes, they 
are both detected and running ;-)
I think /proc/cpuinfo is still the only way to detect an SMP mashine.
