Thanks for your reply. 

Computers never cease to amaze me. For the life of me, and through
dozens of reboots and BIOS changes, I could never get sound *and* the
secondary IDE channel to work. I could get one or the other, but not
both. Today, a miracle happened. ;-) I get both.

The explanation might be that I dropped back to MPS 1.1 (from MPS 1.4)
and I had never tried that particular combination. (BTW, I have an ASUS
CUV4X-DLS, dual 1GHz P3s, onboard Fast-80 Wide SCSI-3 and 10/100
Ethernet, 1GB of PC133 RAM. It's a nice machine ;-)

According to Alan Cox, MPS 1.4 is just a stricter interpretation of MPS
1.1, but it seems to make all the difference.
