I've read other distributions or other users put things in /usr/local, /opt, \
sometimes even /var and under home directories. I've been looking at some programs \
like xstow and zero install on Sourceforge install to get some ideas on dealing with \
programs with dependencies and where to put them on one's machine so they don't \
interfere with the rest of the operating system.

I have a ton of Slackbuild scripts to build my favorite software, because it's not \
easy to find binaries for them. Unfortunately, if you're updating between 50 to 100 \
programs when you replace your system, it takes forever to recompile and rebuild. I \
guess that's why many distributions have a shared repository, so they can share the \
work of building their favorite applications. The one big drawback I've seen so far \
to sharing is that you're stuck with using whatever build and dependency options the \
repository contributors choose or you need to go back to building it yourself.
