Position Announcement: Web Applications Programmer
The Division of LifeLong Learning invites applications for the position of Web \
Applications Programmer. This is a full-time, twelve-month, professional appointment \
with full benefits. The position is funded by a Learning Anytime Anywhere Partnership \
(LAAP) three-year grant. The LAAP grant will support the design and development of \
the Virtual Instructional Designer, an Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS) \
for higher education faculty creating online courses. The VID will be a complex, \
interactive Web site available to institutions throughout the country after the grant \
beta-testing period. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the design of a \
groundbreaking tool for post-secondary faculty development. See \

Responsibilities: 1) Participate on VID development team providing advice on design \
elements, appropriate development tools, and other technical considerations of VID \
product; 2) Research and advise VID development team on appropriate tools for \
prototyping, developing, and maintaining VID application(s); 3) Research and advise \
VID development team on browser and workstation requirements and limitations as they \
relate to the VID application design; 4) Coordinate design elements identified by VID \
development team into specifications for prototyping and subsequent programming of \
application(s); 5) Develop and present to VID development team detailed \
specifications for programming the production VID application(s) including: creation \
of required databases, incorporation of Accessible Software Design Requirements \
prescribed by the Department of Education, browser-based code to provide alternative \
techniques where required by specific browser implementations; 6) Coordinate with the \
VID development team test criteria and test scripts for verifying the actions as well \
as the response time performance of the VID application program(s); 7) Develop and \
maintain for the VID development team the VID Project Management Site; 8) Develop \
online surveys as identified by the VID development team for user analysis; formative \
evaluation; and feedback; 9) Work with ISU systems administrators on account, \
software, custom tools and security issues related to the design of the VID; 10) \
Write or co-write major Project Documents related to the functionality of the VID.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 1) Bachelor's degree in Computer Science \
or related field; 2) Two or more years as programmer/system administrator on Unix \
environment (Solaris, Linux, SCO, AIX) including, one plus years using C or Perl for \
development of CGI programs; 3) One plus years developing Web pages in a Unix \
environment; Experienced in coding Web documents in HTML without a tool; 4) \
Experience using SQL database content in Web pages.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 1) Skills in Java or JavaScript; 2) \
Familiarity with Windows and Macintosh client issues including browser compatibility, \
document handling, and common Web publishing tools; 3) Demonstrable ability to \
implement Web pages based on paper layout and functional description; 4) Experience \
in multimedia Web content delivery; 5) Experience working with end users.
Reports To: VID Project Development Leader in the Division of LifeLong Learning.
