Software:
linux 2.2.18pre17 + aic7xxx 6.1.{7,13} + st.c Sep 5 23:17:00 2000
tar 1.13.17

Hardware:
Abit KT7A, Duron 900, 256MB SDRAM
Adaptec 2940 UW Pro (aic 7880)
HP C5683A DDS4 (20/40GB) DAT
Seagate Barracuda 9GB scsi disk

The combination worked couple of weeks (we took at least one backup per
day), but suddenly it started giving these:

May 8 15:47:53 linux kernel: scsi0:0:4:0: Command not found
May 8 15:47:53 linux kernel: aic7xxx_dev_reset returns 8194
May 8 15:49:08 linux kernel: scsi0:0:4:0: Attempting to queue a TARGET
RESET message
May 8 15:49:08 linux kernel: scsi0:0:4:0: Command not found
May 8 15:49:08 linux kernel: aic7xxx_dev_reset returns 8194
May 8 15:50:22 linux kernel: scsi0:0:4:0: Attempting to queue a TARGET
RESET message
May 8 15:50:22 linux kernel: scsi0:0:4:0: Command not found
May 8 15:50:22 linux kernel: aic7xxx_dev_reset returns 8194
May 8 15:51:34 linux kernel: scsi0:0:4:0: Attempting to queue a TARGET
RESET message
May 8 15:51:34 linux kernel: scsi0:0:4:0: Command not found
May 8 15:51:34 linux kernel: aic7xxx_dev_reset returns 8194
May 8 15:52:49 linux kernel: scsi0:0:4:0: Attempting to queue a TARGET
RESET message

about once a minute. (scsi0:0:4:0 is the tape drive in question).

The backup still progresses, but slowly. And I'm not sure the data is
written onto the tape correctly.

Tried changing the tape couple of times, updating the aic7xxx driver (and
hence, booting the box), but the messages started appearing again as soon as
I launched the backup again.

I changed the Adaptec 2940 UW Pro to Adaptec 29160 (aic7892). This didn't
affect the behaviour; the error messages started rolling immediately when I
tried writing the tape after the reboot.

I also ran a cleaning tape twice, which first appeared to fix it (I was able
to write one tape without problems.) When writing the second tape, the
messages started rolling again:

May 14 19:35:44 linux kernel: scsi0:0:0:0: Attempting to queue an ABORT message
May 14 19:35:44 linux kernel: (scsi0:A:0:0): Queuing a recovery SCB
May 14 19:35:44 linux kernel: scsi0:0:0:0: Device is disconnected, re-queuing SCB
May 14 19:35:44 linux kernel: Recovery code sleeping
May 14 19:35:44 linux kernel: (scsi0:A:0:0): Abort Tag Message Sent
May 14 19:35:44 linux kernel: (scsi0:A:0:0): SCB 5 - Abort Tag Completed.
May 14 19:35:44 linux kernel: Recovery SCB completes
May 14 19:35:44 linux kernel: Recovery code awake
May 14 19:35:44 linux kernel: aic7xxx_abort returns 8194
May 14 19:35:44 linux kernel: scsi0:0:4:0: Attempting to queue a TARGET RESET message
May 14 19:35:44 linux kernel: scsi0:0:4:0: Command not found
May 14 19:35:44 linux kernel: aic7xxx_dev_reset returns 8194

etc etc.

What might cause these? aic7xxx? st.c? hardware?
