Did you do a "make install_modules install" when installing the kernel?
You are missing your initrd in /etc/grub.conf (so there is no ramdisk
for it to load). Doing a "make install" builds the init ramdisk and
adds the entry to you grub.conf file.
My RTLinux grub.conf entry looks like (with RedHat 9 and I have now
upgraded to Fedora Core 1):
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.22-rtl3.2-pre3)
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.22-rtl3.2-pre3 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi
hda=autotune
initrd /initrd-2.4.22-rtl3.2-pre3.img
