I forgot to mention something in my previous post.

Even if your default route mask were correct and your routing table looked like
that below. You would still have problems. This is because communiction to your
gateway would match first on the third line of your routing table. This line uses
eth0 which you said was broken.  You'll need to eliminate eth0 from the table
before your problems are resolved.
