Firmware updates while booted into the production OS seems a rather strange thing to do IMO. You're going to need a reboot and maybe a full power-reset to activate. I *only* ever do firmware updates by booting up the Dell update ISO. Yes, it's not exactly fast since it probes a lot of firmware that's not present (even if you build the CD with just model-specific items on it) but at least there are no peculiarities with the running OS image preventing it from doing it's thing.
