The ” Tikanga” word was added (to the issue file) to get around some parsing checks \
of Dell DUPs. Looks like some of the DUPs are doing a more stringent check, before \
updating.

We are requesting our corresponding team to get rid of those checks for future \
releases. Hopefully we will get rid of them for the next release.

Thank you

All,

I just posted a CentOS based LiveDVD which will let the users update the firmware on \
all Dell Servers. The related details are available at:
http://en.community.dell.com/dell-blogs/enterprise/b/tech-center/archive/2011/08/17/centos-based-livedvd-to-update-firmware-on-dell-servers.aspx

Check it out.

Thank you

Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to helping build options for the \
linux user! I plan to add this DVD to my arsenal of BIOS or firmware options. I would \
like to report a couple of minor issues and a couple of failures: Minor issues:
1. /etc/inittab has "ss:" in twice
2. xterm start size of 499x654 was off of the screen for my R710 and should likely be \
< 800x600 based on the default video capabilities of some of the servers. 3. \
/usr/bin/lockfile from the package procmail would be handy to include when using this \
DVD to *attempt* to flash older BIOS's versions that need it (like any pre 3.0.0 BIOS \
for my R710 see failure info below). Failures:
1. I can not for the life of me get the 1.3.6 BIOS updated via \
"inventory_firmware_gui", downloaded newest "PER710_BIOS_LX_3.0.0.BIN" (or any non \
1.3.6 *.BIN BIOS), "dellBiosUpdate -f blah" update to happen on my R710 with this \
DVD. The gui fails outright with no real info returned. The PER710_BIOS_LX_3.0.0.BIN \
says it flashes but the reboot BIOS update fails with something like "failed to \
update". The dellBiosUpdate report just failed. 2. IDRAC6 1.30 -> 1.70 fails with \
"failed to access Virtual USB Device". The downloaded IDRAC6_FRMW_LX_R299265.BIN did \
the same thing when run from the DVD.

All other components updated without issue including SAS firmware and NIC's.

Thanks

PJ

I think I found part of the issue for the iDRAC6 update issue on the R710. There is \
an extra line of "Tikanga" in the /etc/redhat-release file. At least the updates for \
the R710 seem to ONLY want an official RHEL line in the like noted from the \
past<http://pjwelsh.blogspot.com/2011/02/failed-bios-update-on-r710-with-centos.html>. \
In fact, I could use the RHEL 5 redhat-release contents on an update attempt using \
CentOS 6.0.

The BIOS update has still been an issue so far not matter what I try.

I am curios of the use of a non-PAE kernel on the live CD. I was surprised to see \
that my 48GB was only seen as 2GB with an i386 kernel.

Thanks for looking into this. I hope to provide more feedback if there is any.
