I'm trying to install Debian on a PowerEdge 2850. I've succeeded at
doing a PXE install, but I can not get the system to boot from the hard
drive. I get a kernel panic, unable to mount root fs on 08:01.

I'm suspicious of the partitioning system. It once claimed that the
swap partition looked like it was bootable. It once set the type on a
partition to "Linux ext3" all by itself, and it wouldn't let me change
it, and it once declared a partition to be "DOS extended". It will only allow 3 primary
partitions and 2 logical, and only if I specify the logical partitions
first. Are there special rules for partitioning these machines I
should know about?

This may or may not have anything to do with my booting problem, but I
don't understand it.

Thanks,
Rikki Hall
