The easiest way?

# rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.9-e.27.src.rpm
edit /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/kernel-2.4.9-i686-smp.config  to enable APM
edit /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/kernel-2.4.spec to change the version to
 something specific to you (i.e. so it's obvious it's not Red Hat's
 kernel)
# cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS; rpm -bb --target=i686 kernel-2.4.spec

wait....

When finished, you'll have in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i686/ your new
kernels.
