Virtual memory is mapped to your swap partition. If you configure a swap
partition with 100 MB and you have 16 MB memory you will get 116 MB
total virtual memory.
You can use the memory in a transparent way. Each process can access
every (logical) address in the memory and linux translates this logical
addresses into physical addresses which will be swapped on demand.

I don't know the real limits of virtual memory in linux but I think this
will be an academic limit.
In the Installation-HOWTO I read about a limit of 128 MB for one swap
partition. But you can create more swap partitions.
