The dumb terminal is just that a Digital VT510, works great for everything
but this pb150.

I have been trying to avoid using the Mac's as the other end of the link for
various reasons but I guess I could give it ago, if I can find a mac<->mac
serial cable.

The method you describe below is what I have been doing using the PB150, so
I at least have that bit right.

What wrong with the pb150? hmm whats right with it? It was a general comment
meaning that the pb150 is not a usable machine wrt linux at this stage. (I'd
love to be proved wrong!)
