Well, i can not answer all your questions, but:

-1 you can repartition your harddisk to make the laptop multi boot
   ( i use a program called partition magic to do this, other progamrs might  
     work also. make *SURE* you have a backup before trying a repartition)

-2 you can have several partitions for / /var /home etc
   I always make CD size (640 MB) partitions, so i can make an easy backup
   to CD, but depending on your needs for disk space this might not
   be ideal for you.  
   Swap should be twice as big as your memory (128 MB mem -> 256 MB swap)
   this is a rule of thumb, and mostly works fine.

I can't help you on the other questions, perhaps someone else can?
