Hi everyone,

I have problems setting up USB port for serial, ppp and direct host con=
nection.
My system is Mandrake 8.2b4 on a Gericom Webgine XL with a 2.4.19-pre5 =
kernel
(the only one working with my PCMCIA controller *and* my SIS900 onboard=
 ethernet chip =

- later kernels hang the machine on bootup while configuring the networ=
k).

My USB Trackball works w.o. problems, although I get the following in /=
var/log/messages:

Apr 30 07:07:44 gericom kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/1=
, assigned device number 8
Apr 30 07:07:45 gericom kernel: input0: Microsoft Microsoft Trackball O=
ptical=AE on usb1:8.0
Apr 30 07:07:45 gericom /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Setup usbmouse hid for =
USB product 45e/23/121
Apr 30 07:07:45 gericom /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: missing kernel or user =
mode driver usbmouse =

Apr 30 07:07:45 gericom /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: missing kernel or user =
mode driver hid =

I don't understand the last two lines, but it works nonetheless. Now th=
e following:

I have tried (after unplugging the trackball):

modprobe usbserial
Apr 30 09:06:34 gericom kernel: usb.c: registered new driver serial
Apr 30 09:06:34 gericom kernel: usbserial.c: USB Serial Driver core v1.=
4

stty /dev/usb/ttyUSB0
stty: invalid argument `/dev/usb/ttyUSB0'

same with /dev/usb/ttyUSB[0-9]

When I try and register the usbdnet module, I get:

modprobe usbdnet
Apr 30 09:09:08 gericom kernel: v0.4b sl@lineo.com, tbr@lineo.com
Apr 30 09:09:08 gericom kernel: usbdnet.c: v0.4b sl@lineo.com, tbr@line=
o.com
Apr 30 09:09:08 gericom kernel: usbdnet.c: USB Host to Device Network -=
for Linux USB Devices using MDLM/CDC
Apr 30 09:09:08 gericom kernel: usb.c: registered new driver usbdnet

This should give me a new device usb0 for the net configuration (workin=
g like 'ifconfig usb0 stuff')
but it doesn't.

Cheers

Edi
