All Linux systems are limited to the number of uid's that can be held by
a variable of type uid_t.  I think that's 32 bits, but it could be 64 in
2.2 (haven't looked).
However, you may wish, for some services, to use a method of authentication
that does not rely on uid numbers.  This could theoretically give you an
unlimited number of "accounts".
