Back when I was using the floor chassis (before acceptably cheap^H^H^H^H^H
cost effective rack mount chassis's were available) I did some temperature
tests of the disks in the 3ware cages. I ran bonnie++ for 24 hours to get
them nice and hot, and shot them with an IR gun. Typical temps of the disks
on the outside near the center were in the 75-90F range, well below max
operating temperature. Room temp was 60F. The chassis's had LOTS of other
fans though, moving air from front to back. Don't count on using just the
fans on the cages - they just move the air over the disks - you'll need
system cooling fans, too.
