If you have a RAID setup with those 4 disks (either RAID-5 or RAID-10) then 
you could easily add another 4 disks in the same setup and then use software 
RAID or LVM to append them.  It probably won't perform as well as a RAID 
array setup for 8 disks though.

Backup, format, and restore is probably your only option.
