With the recent change to the Makefile.am for automake 1.7.1 I get a compile
time error.  For me, this change creates a recursive definition of AM_CFLAGS
that causes the build to fail (though I am using an older version of
automake).  

I think we need to change it to just: 

AM_CFLAGS = @CFLAGS@ 

instead of the trailing $(AM_CFLAGS) on the end.

Would someone commit this since I don't have cvs access at the moment?
