I appologize for my error in this.  When recompiling the Xaw library 
again, just to make sure it was again 2.0.6, I discovered that libXaw.so 
was actually linked to a file called libXaw3d.so.6.1, NOT 
libXaw.so.6.1.  While I am not certain where this other file came from, 
the problem was corrected as soon as I changed the link back to my 
original library.

Again, I am sorry for bothering all of you when the solution was not 
related to the glibc library.  Thanks for your time,
