Is this a c++ program? The libg++ & libstdc++ that comes with RH5.0 are
not thread safe.  You'll want to wait for the official release of libg++
2.8.0 or use egcs, the experimental gnu c compiler and use libstdc++
2.8.0.  See http://www.cygnus.com/egcs/
