I've yet to lay hands on a late-model Mac that didn't have enough
space for Debian in some form.  That's not so much an issue of space
as of priorities and other logistics.

That link will be of some limited use to you given the priorities as
revealed through the description of what you are installing.  If you
are going to partition to make room for, at the minimum, Linux-usable
swap and root and yet plan on keeping MacOS X, you want to do that
before farting around with fink or osxgnu or gnu-darwin or any of
that stuff--there is no program of which I'm aware that will
non-destructively resize existing hfs+ partitions.  I recommend
partitioning with the Debian installer CD, marking what partitions
you want to use in MacOS as Apple_HFS, and then "erasing" them to put
HFS+ on them later with the Apple provided Disk (dis)Utility.  I
fact, just such a scheme was crucial to getting some installations
done as I needed recently.  A firewire cable and another Mac with
firewire and with disk space to spare might be particularly useful,
here, too.

Also, the article was written before woody was stable.  He doesn't
mention mix of the Debian distribution he was installing--the ATI
Rage Mobility driver in one of our older powerbooks, for instance,
still requires pulling XFree86 4.2 from present-day testing.  In any
event, I expect it to be a little bit more involved for you than what
he describes.

Aside from that, I can't speak to the Airport or modem issues, and
will say that that article pointed me in the direction of some things
I might want to try.

As it stands, it might be better to retire this conversation to
debian-powerpc. (Probably high time I subscribed to it, anyway).
