Okay, I haven't actually tried to compile the e100 (v1.6.6)
for a 2.4.4 kernel, which according to this:

http://support.intel.com/support/network/adapter/pro100/30504.htm

is the highest supported rev of the 2.4.x series. Has anyone
here managed to get this driver to work with a 2.4.5 kernel?
Any 2.4.x kernel? If so, how did your process differ from
Intel's directions?

I have the 2.4.5 sources in /usr/src/linux, running the 2.4.5
kernel and still the compile manages to generate errors.

Any insight MUCH appreciated. TIA!
