I used something like that in the past:

mt -f /dev/st0 setdensity 0x85		# compress scsi dlt 35/70	
dump 0Bf 70000000 /dev/nst0 /dev/sda1	# for 70MO

but perhaps it is obsolete with recent versions of dlt or dump
