I tried installing the new pre-release pppd 2.3.9 and the kernel
patches (to 2.3.10) which split ppp into ppp_generic and ppp_async
etc. With this combination diald 0.99.1 dials, launches pppd and LCP
negotiation goes fine but diald does not seem to recognise that pppd
has connected. netstat -r shows a route to by ISP's gateway on ppp0
(as well as via tap0) but the default route is still set on tap0.

Using just pppd 2.3.9 without (or having backed out) the kernel
patches, diald 0.99.1 works fine.

I suspect that the method used to indicate that the connection is up
has changed.
