Thanks for your reply.

I now have the right sources + tree (Knoppix kernel
2.4.26 from the online DamnSmallLinux repository) -
these unpack to /usr/src. gcc is also installed.

And I've cp -Rp /KNOPPIX/* /ramdisk/home/dsl/source
and cp -Rp /KNOPPIX/.bash_profile
/ramdisk/home/dsl/source

(This last step just copies the running Knoppix kernel
to a directory 'source' so you can make alterations to
this before compressing this directory into a
"remastered" image file and building a new ISO (from
which I will burn a new cd). So a new module should
be installed in 'source' I guess).

However I get this error:

root  ~/loop-aes/loop-AES-v3.0c $ -> make clean
rm -f *.o *.ko *.orig *.rej *.mod.c patched-loop.[ch]
test-file[1234]
rm -f -r test-dir1 tmp-d-kbuild

root  ~/loop-aes/loop-AES-v3.0c $ -> make
LINUX_SOURCE=/ramdisk/usr/src/linux-2.4.26
INSTALL_MOD_PATH=/ramdisk/home/dsl/source
cd /ramdisk/usr/src/linux-2.4.26 && make
SUBDIRS=/ramdisk/home/dsl/loop-aes/loop-AES-v3.0c
modules Q='@cd
/ramdisk/home/dsl/loop-aes/loop-AES-v3.0c && if [ "$@"
= "modules" ]; then make modules; fi; # '

make[1]: *** No rule to make target `modules'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory
`/ramdisk/usr/src/linux-2.4.26'
make: *** [all] Error 2
