Hmm -- to make sure I understand, this is a 640x480x4bpp display?  I would not 
expect this to flicker as 640x480x8bpp displays seem to work just fine.  I 
would scope the CF bus cycles and make sure they are not excessively long -- 
refer to Jeff Sutherland's email about the RDY(wait) pullup resistors.

I was about to say sync strataflash might help you here, but writes to sync 
strataflash are done in async mode.  Read performance will be better, but not 
write.  Again, spacing the writes out in software might help.
