Subject: GNU MDK version 0.3.5 released
From: "Jose A. Ortega Ruiz" <jaortega@acm.org>

GNU MDK 0.3.5 has been released. It is available from
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/mdk/ and mirrors of that site (see list of
mirror sites at http://www.gnu.org/order/ftp.html) [0].

GNU MDK provides a simulator of D. Knuth's MIX computer, and a
development environment to write, run and debug MIXAL programs on it.

New in this release:

** In gmixvm, when the mouse pointer is over a MIXAL source line, the
   status bar shows the value of the variables appearing in this line.

** The current symbol table can be displayed, in gmixvm, using the menu
   command Debug->Symbols...

** Bug fix: the load, compile and run file dialogs now get the correct
   filename under linux.

** Bug fix: fonts used by gmixvm are now always correctly saved.

** Bug fix: 'psym' now works correctly in gmixvm.

** Bug fix: the symbol table for a MIX file is now correctly recovered
   both in gmixvm and mixvm (negative values where incorrectly
   converted to a positive value).

Visit the MDK home page at http://www.gnu.org/software/mdk/mdk.html.

Bug reports should go to bug-gnu-mdk@gnu.org.

Enjoy!

Subject: KSnuffle-2.2 released

Thanks!
==========[snip]========

KSnuffle, the KDE network packet sniffer, is now available for download
from:

ftp://195.92.31.34/ksnuffle-2.2/ksnuffle-2.2.tgz

This version has been built against a fairly recent KDE2.1 CVS snapshot.

The manual pages are online at

http://www.quaking.demon.co.uk/ksnuffle.manual

The main change from 2.1 is a work-around for the forthcoming KDE
change whereby setuid programs will not be run.

Please note that if the remote sniffer interface is not compatible with
2.0 and earlier versions. If you use remote sniffers, then you will need to
reinstall the rsnuffle daemon.

A few people have asked about RPMs. Sorry, none avaiable. I've got a
non-standard setup anyway, and there are two many combinations (RH, Suse,
Mandrake, installed under /usr or /opt/kde, etc.) to do this. Volunteers?

Regards
Mike Richardson
mike@quaking.demon.co.uk

=====[The Actual Announcement]========================================

KSnuffle is a network packet sniffer for KDE. Features include:

        * Basic filtering and packet selection via the GUI
        * Advanced filtering and packet selection via filter programs
        * Multiple concurrent monitors
        * Text and binary logging, plus replay of binary log files
        * Textual display of network traffic overview
        * Full(er) details of protocol and application data available
        * Display of data in TCP/IP streams
        * Network load histograms and time-averaged load display
        * Parallel display of multiple load histograms
        * Save and restored filter and packet selection configurations
        * Support for use by selected non-root users
        * Plugin support - 0.8 contains plugins for
                * TCP/IP stream monitoring
                * DNS lookup monitoring,
                * Traffic summaries
                * End-to-End summaries

In its current state it is, so far as I can tell, quite reliable. The
main area where is is lacking is actually decoding different network
packets. At the moment, it handles basic decoding of TCP/IP and UDP/IP,
plus ARP/RARP and ICMP. Packet decoding does not go down into the
application level except for DNS packets.

Also, KSnuffle uses libpcap-0.4, as used by tcpdump. As I only have access
to Linux boxen, I cannot build or test it for any other Unix. I'd be
interested if anyone else could try.

KSnuffle is available from ftp://195.92.31.34/pub/ksnuffle-2.1/ ; there
is a homepage at http://www.quaking.demon.co.uk/ksnuffle.html. The latter
contains some screen shots and other information.

Subject: NEWS: You've got mail... WAPpop proves helpful to mobile phone users

INDIA-MOBILE-SOFTWARE

YOU'VE GOT MAIL... WAPpop PROVES HELPFUL TO MOBILE PHONE USERS

by Frederick Noronha

MUMBAI -- Mobile phone users are facing an easier task to download their
e-mail, thanks to the efforts of a Indian medico from the city of Nagpur who
has written a freely-distributable software program called WAPpop.

It is drawing hundreds of downloads each day after an upgrade to the
software program which was done some weeks back.

Mobile phone users have access to phone services while on move, but they
need a computer in order to have a look at their e-mail. "WAPpop was written
keeping the above problem in mind. So that they can have access, to have a
glance on their e-mail while on move," says Dr Tarique Sani.

He told this correspondent that by using a WAP (wireless-access protocol)
enabled device, like a phone, PDA, or palmtops, the software he wrote --
which is called WAPpop -- can read mail from an Internet server, reply or
forward mail, even delete mail and send new messages.

The paedetrician-turned-software guru says he WAPpop still remains the only
OpenSource software of its kind in India. It was also the first OpenSource
software doing its job listed on prestigious international website
Freshmeat.net when the first version was released in July 2000. Some weeks
back, the software was upgraded.

OpenSource is a type of specially-licensed software code that offers its
users freedom to use and adapt. This form of collaboratively writing
software through the efforts of volunteers worldwide has been making news,
because of some excellent products it has generated.

Recent upgrades have also been attracting attention of computer users
worldwide.

Says Sani: "The response has by far surpassed expectations. Before the
release of second version the downloads (by persons seeking a copy of the
software) had tapered down to an average of 1000 per month. The downloads
for second version have been an average of 500 per day (soon after it was
upgraded in end-June this year)."

Sani believes that this WAP-based software could have a lot more potential
if the use of WAP devices increases. Presently, he concedes, the
tiny-screen and cumbersome typing procedures are a "major hurdle" for anyone
wanting to use such wireless devices to access the Internet.

There is also limited bandwidth available for WAP. But this could change in
the near future.

What prompted the paedetrician-forensic medico to take up this unusual
project? Says Sani: "When we started this project WAP was a hot technology
around the world. Unfortunately most of the WAP development was centered
around Microsoft's ASP."

But Sani himself "loves PHP", which is the OpenSource's answer to ASP and
the most popular web-scripting language around the world. "I felt that I
could make a mark for PHP, OpenSource and in turn myself in the WAP world
and to that extent I feel this project has been a success," says he.

Sani, a doctor by education having done his post graduation in Pediatrics
and Forensic Medicine, opted for becoming the CTO (chief technical officer)
of his own web-engineering company called SANIsoft <http://www.sanisoft.com>
based in the Central Indian city of Nagpur.

This small firm specialise in web development using Open Source
technologies mainly PHP, MySQL/PostgreSQL, Apache running on Linux and more
recently running on Windows servers.

Sani says modestly that he is not the "lone author of WAPpop", but two other
programmers in SANIsoft, Girish Nair and Vinay Kumar, have made "significant
contributions to the code".

Inspite of its immense potential as a software superpower, India's
contribution to OpenSource software has still been rather small. Says Sani:
"I wish that it was better. It has the potential to be much better."

He feels that Indian students and professionals simply don't have the spare
time to contribute enough to this international volunteer-effort at
generating high-quality software code. Encouragement is lacking too, but
this is beginning to change as more Indian corporates behing to take to
Linux, the 'free' computer operating system, he notes. (ENDS)

Subject: Announce Spgmr08-0.7

Hi all,

Version 0.7 of the spgmr08 microcontroller programmer utility for
Motorola MC68HC908 family devices is available at
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/spgmr08/spgmr08-0.7.tar.gz.

This is a major rewrite of both the server and GUI to support multiple
devices. Version 0.7 now supports the GP32 and AB32 processors.
Security code management has been significantly enhanced. Docs still
stink :(. Best info is in design.txt.

The project page is at http://sourceforge.net/projects/spgmr08 (there's
no web site yet).

You're going to need PCCTS to compile this thing. And Visual TCL 1.2.2
to play with the GUI. A dynamically linked executable is included in
the release package.

Enjoy,

From: Harald Kirsch <kirschh@lionbioscience.com>
Subject: bras 1.2.0 Rule Based Command Execution with Tcl

                              ANNOUNCING
                             --- bras ---
                     Rule Based Command Execution
                               with Tcl

I am pleased to announce version 1.2.0.

What's new?

1) The command for a rule can now be .relax. to indicate explictly
that nothing need to be done to bring the rule's target
up-to-date. Use of .relax. suppresses the message
  # making target
for said target.

This is most conveniently used together with the predicate [updated]
which was introduced in 1.1.0 to somehow mimic gnu make's .PHONY
target.

2) An example was added to demonstrate how [updated] and .relax. work
together.

The docs were updated to reflect the additional features.

WHERE CAN I GET IT?

The distribution can be found at
   http://wsd.iitb.fhg.de/~kir/brashome/

>From there you can download the distribution, read the docs online or
download the documentation (in PostScript). A list of changes to
previous versions is also available.

WHAT IS IT ANYWAY?

Out of frustration caused by several (mis)features of make I decided
the other day that I would like to have a tool which combines
rule-based and script-like command execution. The result is bras. It
is written in Tcl and the rule-files it uses are also pretty much
Tcl. However, bras defines a set of new Tcl-commands which implement
rule-based command execution.

Main features are:
o rule-controlled command execution, similar to make;
o written in Tcl, no compilation required;
o Tcl-syntax so that commands associated with rules may contain
  control structures;
o dependencies in foreign directories can trigger sourcing rule files
  in that directory, recursive bras-execution is not necessary;
o just any boolean expression can be used to define when a target is
  out-of-date.
o pattern rules which deserve the name;
o explicit invocation of the reasoning process possible;

Send comments and requests for enhancements to
