EHLO!

I haven't announced new versions for some while, and since I receive
some mails from users, who report already fixed bugs, here it goes:

description from lsm entry:

- --- cut ---
Description: Pinfo is an info file viewer. It was created, when I
was very depressed, trying to read gtk info entries
using the standard tools. Pinfo is similar in use to lynx.
It has similar key movements, and gives similar intuition.
You just move across info nodes, and select links, follow
them... Well, you know how it is when you view html with
                lynx. :)
It supports as many colors, as it could.
Pinfo also supports viewing of manual pages -- they're
colorised like in the midnight commander's viewer, and
additionaly they are hypertextualized (i.e. when pinfo
encounters a reference of form manualname (n), then you
can press enter there, and voila -- you're on the page
                for `manualname'.
Keyboard and colors are fully configurable.
Pinfo supports URL's embedded into info documents and man
pages. To be precise, supported URL's are mailto, ftp, http.
- --- cut ---

the news (since last announcement) are:

- --- cut ---
0.6.1 Modified behaviour of auto-pgdn. It now expands the submenus,
as in info.
Fixed problem with pinforc installed to non-exsisting etc directory
Fixed problem with black bar on first man page
        Fixed buggy whitespace-skip comparing procedure
Manual code can now handle hyphenated url links (it's still not
perfect with e-mail--it only works if the `@' is in the upper line)
Fixed bug in indirect-file search engine (a misplaced if())
        Added texinfo documentation.
Manual code is now case insensitive as far as sections are considered
0.6.0 Replaced evil `myclrtoeol' with `bkgdset+clrtoeol'
        Fixed putenv handler
Make install does not overwrite old pinforc anymore (this has it's
bad side--you must deal alone with version incompatibilities)
        fixed sorting of dirpage matches
        fixed some small bugs
0.5.9
Setenv()->putenv() (so pinfo can now compile without problems
        at nonlinux unices)
Added SAFE-GROUP, and SAFE-USER config file options for defining
users, to which we want to drop root privileges when running pinfo
Added HIGHLIGHTREGEXP option, to allow highlighting of user defined
        regexps when viewing manuals/infos
Search highlighting works now "professionaly" (as in less)
Fixed sigsegv bug in search engine.
- --- cut ---

From: "Riccardo Facchetti" <riccardo@master.oasi.gpa.it>
Subject: apcupsd 3.8.0 release announcement
Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 21:34:51 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hello,

after 5 months of hard work, the new 3.8.0 version
of apcupsd is ready for production.

apcupsd is a daemon that monitors your APC Uninterruptible
Power Source for utility power anomalies and failures and
take the correct actions to allow clean system operation during
utility power events.

It support fully or partially these OSes, listed are even the contacts for
each OS/distribution:

Linux Debian Leon Breedt <ljb@debian.org>
Linux RedHat Kern Sibbald <kern@sibbald.com>
Linux Slackware Devin Reade <gdr@gno.org>
Linux SuSE Riccardo Facchetti <riccardo@master.oasi.gpa.it>
FreeBSD/BSDi Jeff Palmer <jeff@isni.net>
HP-UX Carl Erhorn <Carl_Erhorn@hyperion.com>, Robert K
Nelson <rnelson@airflowsciences.com>
OpenBSD Devin Reade <gdr@gno.org>
Sparc Solaris Carl Erhorn <Carl_Erhorn@hyperion.com>

A list of release notes and major improvements over
3.7.2 follows.

.. In master/slave configurations, all masters and slaves
must be updated at the same time. Version 3.8.0 is not
compatible with versions prior to 3.8.0-pre4.
.. An implementation of apcupsd under Win32 has been completed.
.. Alpha Tru64 port.
.. Support for the Back-UPS Office series of UPSes.
.. Fixed dumb UPSes working with the Custom Simple cable.
.. Master/slave code works with 64 bit machines.
.. Correction of a buffer overflow on certain newer UPSes.
.. More fault tolerant on startup in master/slave configuration.
.. Additional STATUS variables (number of times on battery,
amount of time on batteries, time/date of last transfer to
  batteries, apcupsd start time/date).
.. Proper support for older (pre 1994) UPSes in slave configurations.
.. Tighten file permissions for improved security.
.. apctest program for testing serial ports.
.. Automatic notification of certain events by email.
.. Strip executables during make install.
.. A lot of additions to the online manual.
.. New --with and --enable options in configuration. See
  ./configure --help

Please, pay attention to the following notes.

1. Anyone using a pre-release of the Win32 version of
apcupsd is strongly urged to update to the official
release as it corrects a number of problems with the
scripts and provides improved error messages.

2. Name resolution does not work on Win32 apcupsd.
You must use numeric IP addresses instead of machine
names. This effects only master/slave configurations.

3. Anyone wishing to use apcupsd 3.8.0 in a master/slave
configuration must update all machines at the same time
since versions prior to 3.8.0-pre4 are not network compatible
with this release.

... and at last, the most important note: 3.8.0 is mainly hard
work of Kern Sibbald that helped me a lot, mantaining the 3.x
source tree while I was working on 4.x .. thank you Kern !!

Enjoy,
      Riccardo.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I'm pleased to announce the release of my latest book, _Linux Samba
Server Administration_, which is part of Sybex's Craig Hunt Linux
Library. This book covers the installation, configuration, and use of
Samba on a Linux system. Although Samba operation is largely the same
from one Unix-like OS to another, there are OS-specific aspects to
Samba (such as smbmount), and when a feature differs between OSs, my
book emphasizes how things are done under Linux. I've also aimed to
make the book accessible to Samba newbies and useful to experienced
administrators. The book is structured so that the first few chapters
will help you get a system up and running; subsequent chapters cover
more advanced material. The official release date is November 13, and
the book should be in stores by the end of November at the latest. You
can read more at http://www.rodsbooks.com/samba/.

Here's a list of the book's chapters:

Part 1. How Things Work
1. An Introduction to SMB/CIFS
2. Integrating SMB/CIFS into Linux

Part 2. Essential Configuration
3. Installing Samba
4. GUI Configuration Tools and the smb.conf File
5. Configuring File Sharing
6. Configuring Printer Sharing
7. Using Linux as an SMB/CIFS Client

Part 3. Advanced Configuration
8. Automation
9. Samba as an NBNS Server
10. Configuring Domains
11. Local and Routed Browsing
12. Tuning Samba for Optimum Performance
13. Integrating Samba into a Broader Network

Part 4. Maintaining a Healthy System
14. Samba Security Considerations
15. Managing Accounts
16. Backups
17. Troubleshooting

Part 5. Appendixes
A. Configuration Reference Guide
B. OS-Specific Issues
C. The GNU GPL

The total page count should be roughly 600 pages, but I've yet to see
the final product myself, so this is only an estimate.

Hi,

I'm building a new linux community website. I have not posted a press
release anywhere, and I'm only publicizing it here.
It's located at: http://www.deeplinux.com.
Here are the particulars: So far it's very slashdotty, aims to be less
hardcore tech and more "easy on the family members and newcomers" in style,
I'm building the message board area now, and will soon have chat and file
announcement services.
The aim of this site is NOT to become a commercial entity (being bought or
backed is not something I am seeking.. this is my HOBBY), and as such I am
searching for volunteers to help with the upkeep of news, spreading the
word, etc.

Thanks for your time.

MToolsFM 1.6
- ------------

MToolsFM 1.6 has been released. MToolsFM was formerly called mfm and is
a graphical frontend to mtools. It thereby allows easy access to
dos-floppies without mounting. In this release, the name was changed to
MToolsFM to avoid a name conflict with the mfm file-manager by A. T.
Reynolds.
This release contains the first serious attempt to check error messages
from mtools-commands. There is a special part of the window reserved for
diagnostic messages from mtools-commands now. There have also been code
cleanups which should make the code more robust with respect to memory
allocation.
MToolsFM is released under the GPL. It is based on the GTK+ widget set
and available for download from

http://www.core-coutainville.org/MToolsFM/

There are also rpm- and debian-packages available.

Subject: PIKT, Problem Informant/Killer Tool, v1.12.0 released
Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 21:41:43 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

PIKT, Problem Informant/Killer Tool, v1.12.0 has been released.

PIKT, an innovative new paradigm for administering heterogeneous networked
workstations, is a cross-platform, multi-functional tool for monitoring
systems, reporting and fixing problems, and managing system configurations.
PIKT is quickly gathering potential as a serious security management system.
PIKT consists of an embedded scripting language with unique, labor-saving
features; a sophisticated script (and system config file) preprocessor,
scheduler, and installer; and other useful tools. PIKT is a category buster
with many, many different uses limited only by your ingenuity and imagination.

Highlights of 1.12.0: Added secret key host authentication (similar to what
ssh and openssh use); added piktc-to-piktc_svc data encryption for file and
command output transfers; improved diagnostic and security logging; allowed
for empty host lists in systems.cfg; relaxed systems.cfg syntax; fixed a
potentially nasty 'make install' bug; introduced several new Pikt functions;
changed how piktc does file fetches, now permitting all OSes to enjoy the
benefits of 'piktc -f' file diffs; made numerous bug fixes and many other
code improvements.

PIKT is distributed under the GNU General Public License. Available now
for GNU/Linux, AIX, FreeBSD, HP-UX, IRIX, OpenBSD, Solaris, and SunOS. For
more info, and complete source code, documentation, and data files, please
visit the PIKT Web site at:

                      http://pikt.uchicago.edu/pikt
