Mstation aka Linux MusicStation News
- ------------------------------------------------
for Nov 00

New Home
We now have a domain name and paid hosting.
This will hopefully improve the reliability of the
site and enhance your reading pleasure :)

new URL is http://Mstation.org or http://www.mstation.org

New Stuff
Broadcast 2000 - We chat with Adam Williams about aspects of
his audio/video editing program which, somewhat counter-intuitively,
is pretty good for mixing audio files on low power platforms.

MusicScript - NaTaS and David Piot have a few words to say about
David's music rendering language.

Apps CD, Pro Tools Free, OS X - An intro to the intro for our
forthcoming
apps CD and a few words about the software release of the year...
the release of a free version of Pro Tools (not for Linux though). Also
a note that we will be expanding our coverage to include audio related
happenings on the BSD based Mac OS X.

The weekly music story is about an ex-punk who made lotsa money
in the dance world.

Cheers
John

    ftpd-BSD looking for new maintainer

ftpd-BSD is a Linux port of the ftp server (ftpd) from OpenBSD. The
last released version is 0.3.2, in sync with OpenBSD version 2.7 (plus
a security fix). This server is not as featureful as wu-ftpd but it
has the advantage of being smaller and (presumably) safer. As there
have been some security issues with both wu-ftpd and proftpd, this is
one possible alternative.

It has been my honor to start this port (precisely "scratching an
itch" because I could find no ftp server suiting my needs) and to
maintain it for some time. However, it has become sadly obvious that
I can no longer continue to maintain it efficiently, or even
adequately. Several changes have been brought to OpenBSD that make
synchronization more and more difficult; moreover, I have several
patches which various users have sent me, which need careful review,
and which I have not had the time of looking at in detail. I have
even been unable, for lack of time, to respond to some user questions
and criticisms.

Therefore, I am looking for a volunteer to take over my work. Of
course, I will give the new maintainer all the relevant data, comments
and pending patches. And I will be hopefully able to answer (his|her)
questions. Quite possibly, the next release should be a joint work
between us.

The amount of work is not enormous. However, it must be done very
meticulously, because many people have come to rely on ftpd-BSD for
its security. The program is not very complicated; however, it must
be fully understood. And be prepared to make an extensive use of
diff, patch and related text tools.

Will candidates please email me at <david.madore@ens.fr> ? I do not
know in advance how much mail I'll receive, so maybe I won't be able
to reply to all; however, I will announce the name of the new
maintainer when it is known, both on c.o.l.a and on the ftpd-BSD
section of my web page:

http://www.eleves.ens.fr:8080/home/madore/programs/#prog_ftpd-BSD

Those wishing to try the current version of the program can find it on

ftp://quatramaran.ens.fr/pub/madore/ftpd-BSD/ftpd-BSD-0.3.2.tar.gz

I also wish to apologize to all ftpd-BSD users for not being able to
continue what I have started; hopefully, a successor will be found
rapidly, and ftpd-BSD can remain always as secure and useful.

Subject: Fcron 0.9.3 - a replacement for Vixie cron and anacron
Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 21:28:46 GMT

====ūGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE====

- --------------030302090102020705010306
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

What is new in this release (0.9.3) ?
- -------------------------------------

- - some bugs corrected about the option "runfreq(1)".

- - some checks have been added to avoid infinite loops.

- - the installation procedure has been improved.

- - the bug in the check for invalid (corrupted) lines has been fixed.

What is fcron ?
- ---------------

Fcron is a scheduler. It aims at replacing Vixie Cron, so it implements
most of its functionalities.

But contrary to Vixie Cron, fcron does not need your system to be up
7 days a week, 24 hours a day : it also works well with systems which
are not running neither all the time nor regularly (contrary to
anacrontab).

To do so, fcron allows you to use the standard mode in which you tell
it to execute one command at a given date and hour and to make it run
a command according to its time of execution, which is normally the same
as system up time. For example :

Run the task 'save //home// directory'
every 3h15 of system up time.

and, of course, in order to make it really useful, the time remaining
until next execution is saved each time the system is stopped.

You can also say :

run that command once between 2am and 5am

which will be done if the system is running at any time in this
interval. Or even :

run this job once every week as soon as the 15 minutes
load average is lower than 0.9

Fcron also includes a useful system of options, which can be applied
either to every lines following the declaration or to a single line.
Some of the supported options permit to: run jobs one by one, run jobs
at fcron's startup if they should have been run during system down time,
a better management of the mailing of outputs, set a nice value for a
job ...

What is planed for next releases ?
- ----------------------------------

I'd like to :
- - allow users to have several fcrontabs.
(I wonder if it is really necessary : what do you think
about it ? Please mail me answers at fcron@free.fr
<mailto:fcron@free.fr> )
- - allow users to control their running jobs (renice, stop,
   continue ...)

(propositions and help are welcome)

How you can help me
- -------------------

I especially need help for testing every fcron functionalities.
If you'd like to help me, please contact me at :
        fcron@free.fr <mailto:fcron@free.fr>

Where can I get it ?
- --------------------

You can either go to the project home page at :

http://fcron.free.fr

or get it from metalab at

ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/daemons/cron/fcron-0.9.3.src.tar.gz

(I've sent the file but it may take some time before it is available on
metalab)

I hope you will enjoy it,

Thibault.

Topic : Disk Management
Presenter : Adam Williams

Working with disk drives can be a dangerous and tricky task. Fortunately
Linux offers several tools for partitioning disks, creating and resizing
file systems. Beyond those basics, there is Logical Volume Management,
Software Raid, and disk spanning files systems. Learn not only what
these terms mean but how easy it is to use them, and how robust that
free operating system really is.

Adam is a network administrator based in Grand Rapids, but the network
he deals with is all over Michigan, with a couple of hundred
workstations, running Linux and other Operating Systems. Not only does
he deal with domain issues at work, but he is also the owner of the
domain "whitemice.org". Recently married and ensconced as a KLUG officer
(independent events), Adam has been a regular contributor to technical
discussions on our main mailing list, both presenting and solving some
of the most challenging networking and configuration problems.

We meet weekly, each Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Our meeting site is Room 4202
of Dunbar Hall on the campus of Western Michigan University.

Subject: ImageMagick 5.2.5 - image manipulation package
Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 21:24:34 GMT

====ūGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE====

The ImageMagick Studio development group is proud to announce the
release of ImageMagick 5.2.5. Version 5.2.5 is primarily a bug-fix and
tuning release, removing imperfections discovered in 5.2.4.

ImageMagick is a robust collection of tools and libraries to read,
write, and manipulate an image in many image formats (over 69 major
formats) including popular formats like TIFF, JPEG, PNG, PDF, Photo CD,
SVG, and GIF. With ImageMagick you can create images dynamically,
making it suitable for Web applications. You can also resize, rotate,
sharpen, color reduce, or add special effects to an image and save your
completed work in the same or differing image format. Image processing
operations are available from the command line, as well as through C,
C++, and PERL-based programming interfaces.

ImageMagick is copyrighted by ImageMagick Studio, a nonprofit
organization dedicated to making software imaging solutions freely
available. ImageMagick is available for free, may be used to support
both open and proprietary applications, and may be redistributed without
fee.

The ImageMagick WWW page is

   http://www.imagemagick.org/

ImageMagick 5.2.5 is available via ftp as

   ftp://ftp.wizards.dupont.com/pub/ImageMagick/ImageMagick-5.2.5.tar.gz

If ftp.wizards.dupont.com is overloaded, try
ftp://ftp.simplesystems.org/pub/ImageMagick, or check the list of
mirrors at http://www.imagemagick.org/www/archives.html for other mirrors.

Enhancements Over Previous Release:

 Core ImageMagick:

o The drawing package (accessed via -draw or DrawImage()) has been
completely re-written to improve drawing speeds for some
operations by as much as 50X. Improvements to drawing speed have
not sacrificed ImageMagick's excellent antialiased drawing
     capability.

o The significant improvements to drawing performance are
immediately noticed when rendering SVG XML files.

o Fixed many bugs reported to the mailing list and to the bug
     tracking system.

 Magick++:

o The Drawable object classes were completely re-implemented, and
extended to support all of ImageMagick's current drawing
     capabilities, including setting options, coordinate
     transformations, and drawing path capabilities.

Future Plans:

o ImageMagick and Magick++ HTML documentation installed under
    /usr/local/doc.

  o Improvements to SVG support.

o Work on gradients and image filters.

o Support for iptcutil and cgimagick utilities (code is written but
    documentation is still required).

o Magick++ more tightly integrated into ImageMagick package.

o Magick++ support for ConvolveImage(), DeconstructImages(),
    MosaicImages(), and UnsharpMaskImage().

ImageMagick is developed by the members of the ImageMagick Studio
team:

John Cristy - Principal designer and author
Bob Friesenhahn - Magick++, Unix modules, magic, config, CVS, tests,
                        bug tracking
William Radcliffe - VisualMagick, FlashPix, TIFF, timers, watermarking,
                        Windows modules, fast polygon renderer.
Glenn Randers-Pehrson - PNG, MNG, and test script improvements

as well as many individual contributors, some of whom made major
contributions to ImageMagick but shall remain nameless anyway.

the operating system, learn both graphical and command line tools, and
learn to do basic networking. The class is scheduled for December 2-3,
2000.

In addition to carefully designed lecture material delivered by
experienced Linux professionals, there is a heavy emphasis on hands-on
learning. Attendees get a powerful Linux laptop on their arrival, along

with other class materials. At the end of the class they take this
laptop
with them to further enhance their Linux expertise. Professionals with

basic UNIX experience can enroll in the the popular "Linux Certification

Bootcamp" class.
