LIRC - Linux Infrared Remote Control, Version: 0.6.1

Copyright (C) 1996 Ralph Metzler <rjkm@thp.uni-koeln.de>
Copyright (C) 1998-2000 Christoph Bartelmus <lirc@bartelmus.de>
(according to GNU General Public Licence 2.0 or later)

LIRC is a package that allows you to decode and send infra-red signals
of many (but not all) commonly used remote controls.
Pre-release versions are currently available at the LIRC homepage:
http://fsinfo.cs.uni-sb.de/~columbus/lirc/

Former versions focussed on home-brew hardware connected to the serial
or parallel port. Descriptions how to build this hardware can be found
on the LIRC homepage. Current versions of LIRC also support a variety
of other hardware. An up-to-date list of all supported devices and the
status of the according drivers is available on the LIRC homepage.

The most important part of LIRC is the lircd daemon that will decode
IR signals received by the device drivers and provide the information
on a socket. It will also accept commands for IR signals to be sent if
the hardware supports this. The second daemon program called lircmd
will connect to lircd and translate the decoded IR signals to mouse
movements. You can e.g. configure X to use your remote control as an
input device.

The user space application will allow you to control your computer
with your remote control. You can send X events to applications, start
programs and much more on just one button press. The possible
applications are obvious: Infra-red mouse, remote control for your TV
tuner card or CD-ROM, shutdown by remote, program your VCR and/or
satellite tuner with your computer, etc. I've heard that MP3 players
are also quite popular these days.

Adding new remotes is still problematic but since version 0.5.2 there
comes the first program that will try to add new remote controls
automatically.

Don't expect much documentation. This is only a pre-release version
and there is still much to be done before LIRC becomes easily
configurable and usable.
For people with a little C/C++ knowledge this should already be possible
with this pre-release. Otherwise, wait for version 1.0.

Japanese WordMage is a complete Japanese productivity package for MacOS, Windows
95/98/NT/2000 and Linux which does not require any Japanese operating system
software to run (it contains its own Kanji fonts, Japanese input system, etc).
It received a 5-star rating from reviewers on both ZDNet and Tucows, two of the
biggest and most well-respected software download sites on the Internet. It also
received a 'Recommended' rating from AccessEd in Australia (the software review
division of the Queensland Department of Education).

Japanese WordMage includes nine highly integrated functions:

* a Japanese wordprocessor
* a multilingual HTML web page editor / viewer
* various study systems (with authoring):
  - interactive storybooks
  - auto-revision flashcards
  - 'Kanji Safari' multiplayer game
  - reading, aural and visual comprehension
* a powerful Kanji reference dictionary
* a grammar library builder
* a text translation aid

Source-Navigator was a product sold by the former Cygnus
before they were acquired by Red Hat. This IDE has some
really cool code comprehension features (it is like LXR
in an IDE). You can look at members of a class, function
call graphs, #include relationships, and find every place
where a given function is called in your source code.
It also supports multiple languages (C, C++, Java, Tcl/Tk
Fortran, among others). It can even generate Makefiles
for you.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

ImPress 1.1 beta
July 20, 2000

Took too long...but it's finally out!

This version fixes many problems as well as adding significant
new features:

http://www.ntlug.org/~ccox/impress/Main.html

          New Features in 1.1!

                       HTML Documentation!
                             Easy navigation
                       Improved Text Handling!
                             Dynamic font lists
                             Simpler Dialog
                       Compatability Mode!
Output in a Tcl/Tk version independent format
                       Raster Images!
                             Gif, PNM, Others
                       Templates!
                             Include objects on every page
                       Web Based Slide Shows!
Standalone feature now works in browser

Also some significant modifications have been made to the Tcl/Tk plugin for
Wolfgang Glunz's awesome pstoedit program!! The new driver will translate
Postscript files which include text (!). Works very well (thanks to everyone
who pressed me into adding that!!....could well be the best way to edit
Postscript, YMMV).

The HTML documentation is also something that people wanted to see....it may
not be quite complete...but it is a good start.

ImPress is now broken into 3 separate packages:

imp1.1b - ImPress program (one small sample)
imp1.1util - Pstoedit Tk driver ONLY (will need to download and compile
                        pstoedit)
                 - Todd Prater's excellent font3d program with mods (hoping
                        he doesn't mind)
    imp1.1samp - A few more samples

Plus the html documentation.

Since this is a beta, please let me know of problems encountered in this release.
(like the fact that the documentation says "can not edit Postscript" when it
is supposed to say "can now edit Postscript".... hey.... it passed the spell
check)

Regards,
Chris

Subject: xtrs 4.3, a TRS-80 emulator for Unix and X
Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 12:11:41 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

You can now get xtrs version 4.3, a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I/III/4/4P
emulator for Unix and the X Window System, from my TRS-80 Web pages:

  http://www.tim-mann.org/xtrs.html

Version 4.3 adds emulation of the serial port (connecting to a Unix tty
device), and of both Radio Shack and Micro Labs hi-res graphics cards
for the Model III. There are also several small bug fixes. See the included
ChangeLog for details.

Thanks to the folks who sent me information on Model III graphics cards
in response to my request in the xtrs 4.2 announcement! Now I have another
request: can anyone send me specs for TRS-80 joysticks?

General xtrs blurb:

xtrs is a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I/III/4/4P emulator for Unix and the
X Window System. It includes lower case, the real time clock, hi-res
graphics, serial port, parallel printer, mouse, cassette, sound and music
output (requires OSS), 5" and 8" floppy disk drives in single and double
density, and even hard disk drives. The emulated floppy and hard disk
file formats are compatible with the popular MSDOS-based emulators by
Jeff Vavasour, Matthew Reed, and David Keil, and (if you choose a capable
enough file format), all features of the original TRS-80 floppy disk
controller are emulated. Under Linux, physical floppy disk drives are
also supported. Physical cassettes can be read and written too. The user
interface is a bit spartan, but it gets the job done.

I'd like to announce ftape-4.04.

What it is
==========

ftape is the floppy tape device driver for Linux.

News

- -- Fix a severe bug in the volume table code. Applies ONLY to
cartridges with more thatn 2^16 segments, where cartridges could
not be shared with various backup programs for other operating
   systems (i.e. Windoze).

The bug caused data loss when appending data to cartridges with
ftape which already contained volumes created with other backup
   programs (and vice versa).
