=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hello to c.o.l.a. subscribers.

A new release of Sing Along Disc Player provides
support for Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA).

The traditional sound support is still provided, and
is automatically accepted when ALSA driver is not
installed.

In rapid aspiration forward, ALSA does not always
provide backward compatibility with older versions, or
adequate support for ALSA sound cards. This imposes
some limitations on ALSA support with SADP. You might
be unable to compile SADP with some older ALSA
versions,
or fail to get 8-bit support for a 16bit sound card.
This is why SADP allows to exclude ALSA support for
either DSP or mixer, or both, in favor of OSS
emulation.

As opposed to majority of other applications, SADP
uses direct calls to ALSA driver and does not require
alsalib. This reduces memory use, makes it more stable
and allows using symbolic links for sound devices. At
the same time, it can be used as a good test, if you
have a problem and don't know whether it comes from
the library or the driver.

Users of recent ALSA releases (0.5) can benefit of
memory mapping, that considerably improves the
appearance of spectrum analyser.

- ----------------------------------------------------
Finally, let me make it easier for those who is not
familiar with SADP, or who has no time to update the

Subject: ftpd-BSD-0.3.1 - Linux port of OpenBSD's ftpd

Hash: SHA1

ftpd-BSD-0.3.1 (fifth release of ftpd-BSD)

This is a Linux port of the ftp server (ftpd) from OpenBSD (the
version number of the OpenBSD version is 6.4 and the version number of
this port is 0.3.1 - sixth public release of it).

This server is not as featureful as wu-ftpd but it has the advantage
of being smaller and (presumably) safer. As there have been some
security issues with both wu-ftpd and proftpd, this is one possible
alternative.

Version 0.3.1 sync'ed up with the status of the OpenBSD CVS tree as of
2000/04/07. Confirmation has been received that the features added in
version 0.3.0 were actually stable, so this is now marked as stable.
Furthermore, the internal ls command found in the original program has
been ported to Linux. GNU libc version 2.1 at least is required to
compile and run this port.

You can find the tarballs and RPMs at the following URLs:

ftp://quatramaran.ens.fr/pub/madore/ftpd-BSD/ftpd-BSD-0.3.1.tar.gz
ftp://quatramaran.ens.fr/pub/madore/ftpd-BSD/ftpd-BSD-0.3.1-1.i386.rpm

http://www.eleves.ens.fr:8080/home/madore/programs/ftpd-BSD-0.3.1-1.src.rpm

Note that if you run an anonymous FTP site that has mirrors and have
used ftpd-BSD previously, you should read the warning on GMT versus
local time in the LIST command output at

http://www.eleves.ens.fr:8080/home/madore/programs/GMT-WARNING

I have retained the original BSD copyright. To make things clear, all
praise should go to the OpenBSD people, and all blame (for example if
I broke something while porting the stuff) to myself.

Subject: CONFERENCE: Call For Papers: Linux Kongress 2000
Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 21:22:09 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

                   Announcement and Call For Papers:
                 7th International Linux Kongress 2000
                 =====================================

The 7th International Linux Kongress 2000 will take place at the
University of Erlangen from September 20 to September 22. It follows
the tradition of the Linux conference series (Heidelberg '94, Berlin '95
and '96, Wuerzburg '97, Cologne '98 and Augsburg '99) which has evolved
into the most important meeting for Linux experts and developers in Europe.

You are invited to participate in this famous Linux community event by giving
a presentation of your work and future plans. The Linux Kongress will be the
best opportunity for Open Source developers to meet in Europe and exchange
ideas about current and upcoming Open Source projects.

The conference will include up to 25 talks during two days (September 21-22)
in two parallel tracks. Both tracks will focus on Linux kernel and
general Open Source development issues, possibly accompanied by talks on
the underlying software technologies and Open Source philosophy.
Each presentation will be 40 minutes (including discussions, when applicable).
Due to the international character of this conference, presentations will
be given in English.

The two tracks will consist of a combination of invited talks and
refereed papers. The 2000 Linux Kongress Program Committee is looking
for original and innovative papers about the current Linux kernel
development and more generally about Open Source development projects.

Some particularly interesting Linux development topics are:
 - Filesystems
 - Device drivers
 - Networking and packet filtering
 - Architectures
 - High availibility
 - Clustering
 - SMP
 - Linux in extreme environments

Interesting Open Source development topics include but are not limited to:
 - Cross development
 - Porting commercial software to the Open Source environment
 - Standards in Open Source environments
 - Managing Open Source development

In addition to the talks, there will be tutorials on September 20.
Proposals are welcome. Topics will be announced later.

To address the fast evolving nature of Linux, new topics not covered
by the conference talks can be discussed during informal gatherings,
called Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) sessions. BoFs may be scheduled at the
conference or in advance by mailing the program chair.

In order to provide the best possible talk offerings, we are soliciting
proposals for new talks. Questions regarding a topic's relevance to the
conference may be addressed to the program chair via email to
chair@linux-kongress.de. An abstract (at least 1 full page) is required
for the selection process. The preferred form of submission is via
electronic mail to the program chair.

Submissions must be received by May 31, 2000 latest. We encourage
everybody interested in giving a talk to let us know about the
subject immediately.

An extended abstract or a full paper for distribution to conference
participants must be submitted by August 31, 2000. Papers must not
have been previously published.

In order to enable presenters to attend the conference, the Linux Kongress
organization can pay for travel expenses and accomodation.

The conference will be organized by GUUG (German UNIX Users Group),
NLUUG (UNIX Users Group - The Netherlands) and LIVE (Linux-Verband),
Any profits from this event will be used to support free software projects.

The complete program and registration information will be available in
June 2000. If you like to receive registration material, please

Subject: Ted 2.8, an easy rich text processor for Unix/X-Windows released
Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 21:21:18 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Ted 2.8, an easy rich text processor for Unix/X-Windows released.

Utrecht, April 15, 2000

Available from
- --------------

ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/editors/ted
http://www.nllgg.nl/Ted

Description of Ted
- ------------------

Ted is a text processor running under X Windows on Unix/Linux systems.
Ted was developed as a standard easy word processor, having the role
of Wordpad on MS-Windows, but more powerful. In my opinion, the
possibility to type a letter or a note on a Unix/Linux machine is
clearly missing. Only too often, you have to turn to a Windows machine
to write a letter or an e-mail message. Teds function is to be able to
edit rich text documents on Unix/Linux in a wysiwyg way.

To my own modest opinion, Ted is really easy to use and of good
quality. I hope that you will find Ted useful.

Changes since version 2.7
- -------------------------
(Ted 2.8: April 15, 2000)
* Editing behavior closer to that of Word. E.G. support for
Control key in navigation and selection has been extended.
* Support more keyboards shortcuts. E.G. for Bold, Italic,
        Underline.
* I used a Motif 2.0 feature in the document properties dialog
and in the mail dialog. Things work again with earlier
versions of Motif. (LessTif was like Motif 2.0)
* Private compilations and installations have been made easier.
* On some versions of Motif, the file selection dialog was not
forced to be on top of the document window.
* Some bugs fixed. In particular in the picture code.
* As a preparation for headers/footers and page numbers, more
section properties relating to these are supported.
* Many people contributed translated resource files. They are
        all included in this release.
* A bug in the production of the Czech and Slovak spell index
        file have been solved.
* Made it easier to influence the default printer and the paper
        size for a print command.

Details on Ted
- --------------

Ted is a text processor running under X Windows on Unix/Linux systems.
Compatibility with popular MS-Windows applications played an important
role in the design of Ted. Every document produced by Ted should be
accepted as a legal .rtf file by Word without any loss of formatting
or information. Compatibility in the other direction is more difficult
to achieve. Ted supports most text formatting, as supported by the
Microsoft applications. Advanced formatting instructions and meta
information are ignored.*) By ignoring unsupported formatting Ted
tries to get the complete text of a document on screen. Ted can be
used to read formatted e-mail sent from a Windows machine to Unix, or
as an RTF viewer in Netscape.

*) Most of the ignored information is not saved either when you
modify and then save an RTF document with Ted.

Features
- --------

* Wysiwyg rich text editing. You can use all fonts for which
you have a .afm file and that are available as an X11 font.
Ted is delivered with .afm files for the Adobe fonts that are
available on Motif systems and in all postscript printers:
Times, Helvetica, Courier and Symbol. Other fonts can be added
with the normal X11 procedure. Font properties like bold and
italic are supported; so is underlining.
* Ted uses Microsoft RTF as its native file format. Microsoft
Word and Wordpad can read files produced by Ted. Usually Ted
can read .rtf files from Microsoft Word and Wordpad. As Ted
does not support all features of Word, some formatting
        information might be lost.
*       In line pictures.
*       Postscript printing.
* Spelling checking in several Latin languages.
* Directly mailing documents from Ted.
* Cut/Copy/Paste, also with other applications.
*       Find/Replace.
* Ruler: Paragraph indentation, Indentation of first line,
        Tabs. Copy/Paste Ruler.
*       Page breaks.
* Tables: Insert Table, Row, Column. Changing the column width
        of tables with their ruler.
* Symbols and accented characters are fully supported.
*       Hyperlinks.
* Saving a document in HTML format.

For a detailed description and a manual, refer to the readme.* files
on the web site in plain text, HTML or RTF format.

Changes since version 2.6
- -------------------------
(Ted 2.7: December 31, 1999)
* I made a mess of reading the spell checker dictionaries on
        big endian machines: Fixed.
* A major step toward wysiwyg vertical layout: Pagination is
        visible on screen.
* Preparations for page headers, footers and page numbers.
* Many features added for printing the document. Ted now also
prints on Level 1 PostScript printers. An annoyance with
locales that use a comma in decimal numbers and printing has
        been removed.
* Various bugs and annoyances removed. A disturbing one
occasionally caused crashes when the last paragraph of a multi
        page document was deleted.

Changes since version 2.5
- -------------------------
(Ted 2.6: September 30, 1999)
* Picture files and spelling dictionaries are now read in a
        machine independent way..
* The HTML produced is now simpler and syntactically correct.
* Support for multiple line spacing, right and center tabs.
* In version 2.5 too much of the screen was redrawn while
        typing.
* Hyperlinks are no longer automatically underlined. They are
        printed in blue.
* Better support for character sets different from latin 1. In
        particular for Latin2 documents.
* Subsequent steps in moving from the X11 layout on screen to
        the exact PostScript layout.

Changes since version 2.4
- -------------------------
(Ted 2.5: July 31, 1999)
* Bugs fixed in picture drawing
* The layout of the text on the screen is no longer independent
of the PostScript layout. Whenever possible, the PostScript
layout is used on screen. Right aligned and centered text are
        supported.
* The PostScript Ted saves to file contains so-called pdfmarks
to keep the links and bookmarks when they are converted to the
        Acrobat PDF format.
* Use the new German orthography in the spell checker, thanks
        to Joerg Jacke.
* Added a Polish spell checker.

Changes since version 2.3
- -------------------------
(Ted 2.4: May 21, 1999)
* Finding an X11 font with the PostScript font has been revised.
* Little bugs that prevented Ted from working with other than
        Latin1 fonts removed.
* Spelling checkers for more languages are added.
* The Ted document has been improved. It is added as an online
        document.
* Many fixes in printing and faxing documents.
* Copy/Paste of images improved. This is now possible on more
        X11 configurations and with xv.
* Elementary support for interaction with session managers.
* A next round in the ongoing struggle with all those different
        window managers.
* Some compilation procedure fixes. Distribution also in RPM
        format.

Changes since version 2.2
- -------------------------

Compared to version 2.2, 2.3 is yet another usability update. (Ted
2.3: March 11, 1999)
*       Printing of tables.
* Support for space before/after paragraphs.
* X11 servers with a 'depth' that is not a multiple of 8
supported. Better cooperation with widow managers that do not
force a window to fit on the screen.
*       Better picture support.
* Better conformance to commonly accepted user interface
        conventions.

Changes since version 2.0
- -------------------------

Compared to version 2.0, 2.2 does not offer much more functionality.
Many little features have been added, and a myriad of bugs has been
fixed. The user interface has been polished a lot to improve Teds
usability. (Ted 2.2:February 6, 1999)

* The compilation procedure has been improved a lot, and Ted
        has been tested with LessTif.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I'm pleased to announce the public release of SMSLink 0.46b.

This software implements a client / server gateway to the SMS protocol
(the short messages sent to mobile phones). It requires the use of
dedicated hardware, though (a Falcom or Wavecom voice modem GSM module,
which is basically just a GSM with a plain serial port and AT commands
support -- please see the project web page for a list of supported
hardware). Both sending and receiving SMSes is supported. Also included
is a SMS to eMail gateway module. Users are now able to send (short)
emails straight from their mobile phones keypad. Mail delivery to the
GSM is under development.

The server modules only runs under Linux at the present time. The
command-line client already exists for Linux, Solaris and HP-UX (but
could be ported to most any Unix platform, I suspect). A Win32 client is
in the works. The server also supports direct telnet ("interactive"
mode).

Version 0.46b is mostly a bugfix release (see CHANGELOG for details),
but also includes preliminary support for PDU mode. No actual PDU code
yet, just a support framework. Warning for SMSLink users: the
configuration file format has slightly changed since version 0.44b to
accomodate for device-level mode selection (please see man
gsmdevices(5)).

This software is distributed under the GNU GPL.

For more information, please visit the project web page at :

Thanks.
