dancing_linux - a rendered 3D-Linux-animation / eyecatcher

The animation shows a nice linux-logo, consisting of the
five letters and additional artwork. Everything is in motion and
is twisting around (glass-, metal-, and light-effects!).
It has a black background and is VERY suitable as an eyecatcher
for shopwindows or your own linux-box.

=================================================
Format: *.flc movie
Resolution: 320*200, 8bit color
                120 frames (about 20 fps)
Renderplatform: Linux-Povray 3.01 (of course)
Rendertime: 15 min/frame on a P133
=================================================

The movie may also be viewed with xanim, but it looks _much_ better
fullscreen! I included John Remyn´s SVGA-Player "flip" (binary).

Please note: There is no povray-code included (yet). It simply was
too chaotic for a release, but I´m working on it.
Give me some feedback to accelerate this! ;-)
The movie may be (a bit) too bright on your monitor. That´s
             a gamma-problem...

The animation is available at:

sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/logos/raytraced/dancing_linux.lsm
sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/logos/raytraced/dancing_linux.tar.gz (1.07 MB)

Subject: console-tools 1998.04.08 available
Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 07:44:50 GMT
Reply-To: dirson@debian.org

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Version 1998.04.08 of the Linux Console Tools has been uploaded to
sunsite, where it should move into /pub/Linux/system/keyboards/. It
is also available from http://www.a2points.com/homepage/3475232/

It should also soon be available in
ftp://ftp.debian.org/pub/debian/dists/slink/main/sources/utils/

Here are the release informations:

This release fixes several bugs about the handling of compressed
data files. This compressed-file support has also been extended in
2 ways: we can read any supported compression format, and supported
compressors now include bzip2 and lzop (in addition to gzip and
 compress).

It includes several new/updated keymap files, thanks to user feedback.

This package is currently under development, use it at your own risks.
However, it should already be a good replacement for `kbd', and you
might like the features not found in the latter, but (as usual) you
have NO WARANTY of any kind.

Some interface-level features are still liable to change (program names,
option names, etc.).

Much work is needed to really get Unicode stuff usable. This will be
my primary goal. It will probably imply hacking the kernel as well for
some features, but the kernel-part is being thoroughly rewritten by
the GGI project, so don't hold you breath...

This package is based on `kbd-0.95', of which it corrects numerous
bugs, and to which it adds several features (compressed PSF fonts,
Screen-font-map fallback tables, 16-bit Application-Charset Maps (also
called "console maps" or "screen maps"), can now output PSF files and
use "-" to read/write most files to stdin/stdout)

I decided to make it a package distinct from `kbd', because I didn't
get at that time feedback from kbd's current maintainer (A. Brouwer)
about my work. Communication was working at some point, and we plan
to finally merge the two packages, but seems not to work anymore, so...

Please send all bug reports, suggestions, or anything else to myself, (but
take a look at the "TODO" file first), feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Please get in touch with me before starting to modify this package, to
prevent duplicated work; as this code is expected to evolve quite rapidly, it
would also be helpful that not too many persons work on the same pieces of
code at the same time, to ease integration.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

We've just released a new version of the QtScape browser. This
version of QtScape is based on Netscape's 19980408 source release.
QtScape now runs under Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT as well as
Linux (and presumably many other Unix-like operating systems). In
addition, the forms and image map support have been improved
considerably, and there have been many minor improvements.

QtScape is available at http://www.troll.no/qtscape/. The full source
code is released under the Netscape Public License, which allows free
distribution and modification.

Statically linked binaries for Linux and Windows as well as source can
be downloaded from ftp.troll.no and its mirrors. At the time of
writing, these mirrors are known to be up to date:

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Are you still running a lot of gettys from init?
And most of the time they're sitting around wasting ressources?
But sometimes you really need lots of virtual consoles just like me?

Then this is the program you have been waiting for. I have been waiting for
it for too long, and finally I wrote it myself :)

consd - virtual console management daemon

consd manages virtual consoles silently in the background. It starts and
kills gettys there depending on how many gettys are just sitting around
and waiting (and wasting ressources). Usually, consd ensures there's always
one (and only one) getty waiting for someone to login. The virtual consoles
with lower numbers are preferred.

consd does not interfere with gettys started by init.

It's small, simple, useful.
Get it, try it, like it :) or remove it again :))

As always - if you can't find it on the ftp servers listed below, try the
'incoming' directories.

  Frank

The Bay Area and the Silicon Valley Linux Users Groups
jointly host an Installfest and workshop at the
Robert Austin Computer Show at the Cow Palace

The next SVLUG Installfest/Workshop is coming Saturday, April 18.
as a combined effort between SVLUG (http://www.svlug.org) and
BALUG (http://www.balug.org) at the Robert Austin Computer Show at
the San Francisco Cow Palace (http://www.robertaustin.com/).

The Installfest will last the duration of the show, from 10AM to 4PM.
This is part of a larger computer show so the general public will be able
to see Linux at this event. So bring some software and hardware to show
off if you can. If you need Linux assistance, just come as usual.

Maps to the Cow Palace are available online from the Robert Austin
company at:

        http://www.robertaustin.com/cpmap.htm

Please RSVP with BALUG's Installfest organizers at:
        mailto:installers@hugin.imat.com

... if you expect to be there in need of assistance, just to help the
volunteers plan for capacity.

See also BALUG's Events Page. Pay attention to their note about
security stickers you'll need to put on any equipment you bring
into the show.

In May our Workshops will return to UMAX (http://www.umax.com) in
Fremont where it is generously hosted by VA Research Inc
(http://www.varesearch.com).

Recent speakers at SVLUG meetings include Linus Torvalds, Marc
Andreesen, Eric S. Raymond, and Bruce Perens. Next month's speaker
will be Tim O'Reilly.

Recent speakers at BALUG meetings include Eric Troan of Red Hat,
and Paul Vixie (architect of BIND and author of "vixie cron").

So bring in your system and exchange free software with other Linux
users --- and maybe you can even buy that upgrade you've been thinking
of from one of the vendors at the show. Let's show the SF PC
vendors how much interest there is in Linux.

(This announcement brought to you by SVLUG's appointed PR
grunt and the Linux Gazette "Answer Guy")
