Subject: [HUMBUG] Next Meeting - 22nd November 2003

The Home Unix Machine Brisbane Users Group exists to get fellow
Unix users in contact with each other, to introduce people to
Unix and Unix-like operating systems, and to help users in
operating those systems. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Meetings tend to be informal. We socialize, discuss Unix and
computing, solve Unix problems for new and experienced users
alike and, these days, have regular talks.

Date: Saturday, 22nd November 2003 (every second Saturday)

Time: From 3pm with the network up 30 minutes after we are
granted entry. The network will be brought down after
midnight to allow time to clean up for a 1am exit.

Venue: Room S201, Hawken Engineering Building (no. 50)
The University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus

Car parking is currently unregulated on Saturdays. The
University is serviced by public transport with frequent
buses during University terms. For more information:

        http://www.uq.edu.au/about/index.html?page=1070
        http://www.uq.edu.au/maps/index.phtml?menu=1&z=1&id=25

Cost: Membership until our AGM in September is $20, but no one
has to join unless they are going to use club services
such as our network access during meetings.

Talks: Information on upcoming talks is announced separately.
For information on talks see the announcements by our
Talks Maintainer on the announce mailing list.

Food: The eating places (ranging from take away to a la Carte)
at 'The Ville' are usually open until about 10pm Saturday
night. There is also the Pizza Cafe on campus near the
        Schonell Theater:

        http://www.schonell.uq.edu.au/pizza_caffe.html
        http://www.uq.edu.au/maps/index.phtml?menu=1&z=1&id=11

Drinks: Various soft drinks and snacks are available from the
three vending machines located immediately outside the
        room. Remember to bring change!

For more information on club meetings and HUMBUG itself see our
web page at http://www.humbug.org.au/ or email me directly.

Subject: Imagine Life Without Google

Mike;

Microsoft really, really wants Google. It wants Google for one reason,
namely, to strip it naked and to castrate it. Microsoft wants to put an
end to people being able to use the power of Google, especially as to
the way that we all can use Google as a tool which makes the Internet
particularly useful in helping us all to get through our days without
depending on Microsoft.

Here's an exercise for all to try. Search Google for Linux Windows that
gets you about 14 million pages, even with the English preference or
filter turned on. Now, got to msn.com and search the Microsoft way for
the same two words. You get exactly 18 pages. The word censorship
doesn't seem to do justice to what Microsoft has done to a msn user who
wants to compare Linux with Windows, does it?

Here's another exercise. Search msn for Linux. Note that the third item
returned is tech.msn.com and that the page no longer exists. The fourth
item deals with this topic "Alternatives to Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP
Learn about the Microsoft alternatives and how to move to them from open
source products."

The mind boggles at the amount of fear that Microsoft has that people
who search the Internet for knowledge, answers and understanding.
Microsoft's fear is so great that it is willing to subvert what is truly
one of the great inventions of history, searching the Internet, to a
mere tool with one purpose, namely, to trick us all into buying
Microsoft's software.

I am compelled to describe that this particular Microsoft stunt is
patently, totally, absolutely, completely perverse. I can well imagine
that the founders of Google could not have been able to sleep at night
for the rest of their lives if they had allowed Microsoft to buy and
cynically subvert their creation. After all, they already have more
money than they can possibly spend in their lifetimes, they have a
fantastic life of creative fulfillment ahead of them and they do have,
well, their pride.

A hearty thanks to the founders of Google, then, for not selling Google
to Microsoft, whatever their specific reasons were for not doing so.
And, for the rest of us, a lesson in what the Internet and its resultant
technologies would end up being used for if Microsoft had its way. To
all the users of msn and its so-called "search" feature, I have to say,
wake up & smell the coffee, kids.

Subject: sysstat-5.0.0 - System performance tools for Linux
Date: Sat, 15 Nov 2003 12:06:53 CST

Hi all,

Yes, that's it: sysstat 5.0.0, the new stable release is now available for all
of you wanting to keep an eye on the performance of their Linux box.

It is available for download from my web page at:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sebastien.godard/

It is also available on ibiblio's Linux archive site:
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/status/
113kB sysstat-5.0.0.tar.gz
92kB sysstat-5.0.0.tar.bz2
117kB sysstat-5.0.0-1.src.rpm
80kB sysstat-5.0.0-1.i386.rpm

The sysstat utilities are a collection of performance monitoring tools for
Linux. These include sar, mpstat, iostat and sa tools.

To learn some more about sysstat, check out
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sebastien.godard/

Enjoy!

Changes vs 4.1.7 are:
2003/11/09: Version 5.0.0 - Sebastien Godard <sebastien.godard@wanadoo.fr>
* New fields added to mpstat: %irq (%time spent servicing interrupts) and %soft
(%time spent servicing softirqs).
* sar and iostat updated to take into account time spent servicing interrupts
and softirqs when displaying percentage of time in system mode.
* By default iostat now displays only statistics information for devices that
are used by the system. You should now use the ALL keyword to tell iostat to
display statistics for every device including those that have never been used.
* The file version.h is now dynamically created. sysstat's version number is
now only recorded in the Makefile.
* sar manual page updated: beginning with kernels 2.4 and later, pgpgin and
pgpgout statistics are in kilobytes and not in blocks (see
linux-2.4/fs/proc/proc_misc.c and linux-2.6/mm/page_alloc.c).
* iostat and mpstat manual pages updated.
* Makefile updated: don't process NLS files if they are up-to-date.
* sysstat's RPM spec file updated to enable clean, non-root builds.
* NLS updated.
* FAQ and CREDITS files updated.

the gun toward the road and fire one shot. He did, during the mean while
those other Jewish terrorists came back, they asked him about water,
Selgin told them someone came from inside to wash the floor. He told
them he heard a gun shot may be someone wants to go and check
there(towards the road) They ran off to search for me. I was bleeding
quite a bit, after a while I lost consciousness.

By the way people should note how mice, salves and masters act, Mahmud
Kurchu knew I was in truck, he knew Selgin and few others had changed
(at least temporarily). Selgin and a couple of other guys just wanted to
save their life first, so I was dying inside slowly slowly and that is
what Mahmud Kurchu wanted. Later when the blood started dripping outside
the truck, Selgin cleaned floor outside the truck and then came in and
started drying the blood using those cloths and towels in truck. While
he was inside one of those Jewish terrorists came back and asked him
about Selgin, Selgin jumped to hide behind those towels. The way he
jumped anyone could have noticed from outside someone was inside. But
anyway the other guy told him he is probably gone inside(the building)
or so. Now they knew he is another one of those guys who had changed.
Anyway I stayed there for two hours inside the truck, Ambulance and cops
never came. Everyone was playing his own kind of game, Mahmud Kurchu had
decided to dump Selgin as well (at least for now), and by the way you
should know when you we
