Subject: A new docklet (swalowed app) for a multiple language keyboard
wmxkb is a swallowed/docked applet for a multiple language keyboard.
It shows and controls XKB groups (key maps), and can be used as a
dockable/swallowed applet with Window Maker or any window manager that
supports swallowing, including gnome, afterstep, fvwm and clones.
Alternatively, you can run wmxkb as a "normal" window with any window
manager.
Features:
* self-awareness: can get group names/codes straight from XKB
* individual font and colour settings for each key group
* assign additional keys for switching groups, or setting a
particular group
* bind a shell script to run whenever a particular group is
activated
and more...
wmxkb can be downloaded from http://www.geocities.com/wmalms

From: Eridani Star System <linux@eridani.co.uk>
Subject: COMM: MailStripper Pro 1.1.1 - SMTP-layer spam filter
Eridani Star System is proud to announce the latest release of their email
server spam filtering product - MailStripper Pro 1.1.1.
MailStripper operates outside the bounds of any specific mail server by
filtering the SMTP stream and acting as an SMTP proxy, thereby acting as
an effective filter whatever you choose to run as your mail server.
And it doesn't have to be on the same machine either.
Changes since 1.1.0
===================
* We've fixed a timeout issue on the local connection between MailStripper
and your MTA. Since MailStripper acts as a proxy, the MTA sees nothing while
MailStripper is receiving the email. On slower connections and larger
messages, this delay can be such that your MTA will time out the connection.
This has been resolved without using keepalives - which can make your MTA
think it is under attack.
* The GUI config tool is now much more logically laid out, and far less ugly
and crowded than the old one.
We thought about listing MailStripper's features here, but we didn't want to
spam you :-) However we are compelled to say that, besides being independent
of your mail server, it does not require cutting-edge versions of system
software either. Nor will a message which crashes MailStripper in an
unforseen way bring down your mail service - it will only crash the subprocess
that is scanning the message.
We won't claim our software has no bugs - that is the stuff of vapourware and
snake oil merchants. Of course those we know of are all resolved, but as new
ones are found we aim to fix them properly as quickly as possible - and all
minor-version upgrades are and will remain free.
MailStripper is licensed in two ways:
Commercial use: Licensed per mail server, irrespective of number of mailboxes,
aliases or CPUs the machine contains, a licence costs £35
(US$56) one-off, with no monthly/annual charge.
Personal use: Licensed per place of residence, a personal user may install
MailStripper on any machine at his/her home, including personal
laptops, but may not be used for commercial purposes. Such a
licence costs £12.50 (US$20) one-off, again with no
monthly/annual charge.
Evaluation licences are also available at no charge or obligation - these may
be used either for personal or commercial use but are time-limited to 21 days.
MailStripper Pro is available online at http://www.eridani.co.uk/MailStripper/
for Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris, and a free 21-day evaluation licence may be
obtained from the above website.

Subject: Linux Brochure Project (LBP)--Linux Advocacy & Publicity
Date: 25 Oct 2003 13:05:01 GMT
Your organization may be interested in the Linux Brochure Project hosted on
SourceForge. This project was developed because the Victoria Linux User
Group (VLUG) wanted to produce their brochure using open source tools rather
than proprietary ones. We registered it at SourceForge so that any Linux
LUG and other advocacy groups could use the software to produce their own
brochure. This project has been written up by LWN
(http://lwn.net/Articles/51938/).
See below for project details.
Barbara Irwin
Publicity Coordinator, VLUG
==============================================================================
The Linux Brochure Project (LBP) is GPLed data and software which is used to
document key Linux information in a standard-size brochure (two sides of a
single letter-sized or A4 sheet of paper that is Z-folded into the six
mini-pages of the brochure).
Four key features of this project make it an excellent advocacy and
publicity tool for LUGS and Linux organizations: 1) the project data and
software are GPLed; 2) all software tools used to build the LBP brochures
are open source; 3) the brochure can be customized to fit individual
requirements of LUGs and other Linux organizations; and 4) the software
produces an attractive brochure.
Currently there are two versions of the brochure -- a "Linus" version, which
features famous quotes from Linus and a VLUG version, which has been adopted
as the Victoria Linux Users Group official brochure. We encourage
contributions of customized versions of the LBP brochure so ultimately there
will be a suite of brochures from around the world. Looking forward to
receiving your version! :-)
The first stable version, 1.0.0, was released on October 5, 2003. Version
1.1.0 was released on October 11, 2003 to provide the option of printing the
brochure on A4 size paper. This new feature will allow the wider global
Linux community full access to this project as well.

Subject: ANN: SATSHELL 1.00.00 The easy way to create GUI shell scripts
Date: 25 Oct 2003 13:10:11 GMT
SATSHELL 1.00.00 has been released and is available from:-
www.satisoft.com/satshell
SATSHELL is the easy way to create Linux/Unix shell scripts with GUI
interfaces. SATSHELL GUI screens are described using a simple easy-to
learn screen layout language (SAT/DL). The interface between SATSHELL
and shell scripts is very simple as it uses the normal Linux/Unix
Standard Input/Output mechanism. SATSHELL is available as an executable
for Linux, and as source code for other Unix platforms.
The current release of SAT/DL includes the following features:-
o Labelled entry boxes.
o Buttons.
o Check buttons.
o Radio buttons.
o Multi-column list box.
o Drop down picklist.
o Toolbars (with balloon help).
o Menus.
o Display text.
o Scrollable Multi-line editable text fields.
o Scrollable Read-only text display with HTML style tags.
o File select and save dialogs.
o Borders and lines.
o Support for function keys.
o Tree list (*).
o Support for multiple (child) windows (*).
o Support for check/radio buttons in Grids (*).
o Support for "Borders as Containers" (*).
o Colour icons (*).
o Additional colour options (*).
o Additional toolbar layout options (*).
o Many other minor improvements (*).
(*) New features in this release.
The SATSHELL and SATDLTOOL programs have now been combined into
the new SATUNI program. The behaviour of this program depends on
the name it is given. For example: make a copy of "satuni" with
the name "satshell" to get SATSHELL behaviour. See the documentation
for full details.
This software is released under a BSD style license.

From: "S. Mark Black" <sblack@ee.ryerson.ca>
Subject: MATtool 0.32 released
Hi
I'm proud to announce a new release of the Monitoring and Administration
Tool (MATtool). This version adds:
- Faster cluster status updates on the console. The console on a 250
host cluster will update in 3 minutes (including a 2 minute pause).
- Switch to MD5 passwords. The older method was open to brute force
attackes.
- You can now select groups of hosts based on OS to perform administrative
actions.
This is primarily a bug fix release. See the MAT web site for a full
description of all the changes:
http://www.ee.ryerson.ca/~sblack/mat
It contains screen-shots, as well as descriptions of MAT's functions.
Below is a description of this release of MAT.
Monitoring & Administration Tool (MAT)
--------------------------------------
MAT is an easy to use network enabled UNIX configuration and monitoring
tool. It provides an integrated tool for many common system
administration tasks. The GUI interface hides much of the differences
between UNIX varieties in a heterogeneous environment. The straight
forward interface hides the complexity of the underling configuration
files, allowing many of the mundane administrative tasks to be safely
delegated to others. From a single MAT console you can manage every
UNIX host on your network where the MAT agent is installed.
Tools:
MAT is a time saver. MAT provides many of the tools a System
Administrator needs during the day, including DNS, NIS, Backups, and
Replication. A powerful feature is the ability to run a command on
many hosts at once. For example a new group could be added to all
machines just by doing a select all, then adding the new group. For
generic files a simple editor window is provided, with this the
configuration files for a sites web servers could be changed, just
by editing one.
MAT includes a file manager. It includes all the functions you
expect to see in a file manager with the added advantage that whatever
file operation you take can be immediately taken on all selected hosts.
For example: Change the permissions on a directory over 100's of
machines in a matter of seconds.
MAT includes a flexable replication tool for the distribution of files
from a single machine to up to 64 other machines. Complete control of
file and directory properties is provided, as well as bandwidth saving
incremental replication, where only the changed files are replicated.
MAT includes a Backup tool for SCSI tape devices. Tape catalogs are
stored online, so file retreval is easy. Hosts are backed up in
parallel, and a graphical restore tool makes restores easy. Tape
changes are not yet handled.
MAT includes a command replication tool, allowing a change on one host
to be made on all selected hosts. By selecting several hosts or groups
MAT will run the next command on all of the selected machines, so
changing a password would cause it to be changed on all hosts. Use
with care!
Monitoring:
MAT provides two kinds of monitoring, namely current status, and
historic logs. Through the Status screen you can inspect the current
state of the machine. The MATd screen gives you access to historical
data on the machine. It lets see how heavily loaded you machines are,
how the network interface is performing, and many other parameters.
The MATd daemon allows you to specify alarm thresholds. It can watch
your FTP and Email server for failures. It can watch your disks from
getting full. It can watch the CPU use for thrashing, and several
others. You can taylor your response to each alarm situation,
including taking corrective action.
Administration:
The administrative tasks can be delegated to other individuals.
A MAT user can be granted as much or little access as you require.
Users can be given different access rights on all your MAT hosts.
Every MAT user can be managed from a single console. A log file
records all the MAT commands issued on a host, and is viewable
from the MAT console.
MAT also includes easy to use interfaces for common UNIX
configuration tasks:
File Management
User administration
Hosts
Email Aliases
Mounted filesystems
Crontab entries
DNS client configuration
Login message (motd)
Services
Exported (shared) filesystems
DNS domains & records
Most NIS records
Syslogd entries
MAT allows you inspect many of the common system parameters including:
All syslog files (TK 8.3 recommended for this)
Routes
Processes
Lastlog
Diskspace
Exports
The monitoring deamon MATd runs scripts for monitoring of:
Network Connectivity (through ICMP)
Required Processes
Disk usage
CPU use
Run queue
User logins
DNS server status
FTP server status
SMTP server status
Network Interface Activity
SWAP, and Memory use are monitored in the Linux version.
A simple plotting tool allows you to graph the various monitored
parameters. The monitoring scripts are written in Perl, and should
be easy to customize and expand. The MAT probe has been updated to
display it's current status.
Requirements:
=============
For the MAT agent you need a UNIX machine running:
Linux 2.x (glibc)
Solaris 5.6 (SPARC) or better
Solaris 5.7 (Intel) or better
IRIX 6.x
HPUX 10.20 or better
The Console requires Tcl/TK on at least one host and may run on
Windows. Perl is optional
License:
========
Free for single host installations, otherwise it is shareware.
