From: "GiNaC PR dept." <news@ginac.de>
Subject: GiNaC 1.0 released
Date: Sun, 11 Nov 2001 19:29:56 CST
Reply-To: news@ginac.de

                                        MAINZ, Germany, November 6, 2001
                                                 (for immediate release)

The GiNaC hackers, the leading providers of advanced mathematical
software solutions for research and industrial applications, loudly
announce the availability of GiNaC version 1.0.

GiNaC stands for "GiNaC is not a CAS", i.e. not a Computer Algebra
System. This is reminiscent to the term GNU, which stands for "GNU is
not Unix", yet GNU systems widely define Unix today. It is a C++
class-library that allows certain common symbolic manipulations to be
expressed directly in that language.

"This release is going to change a whole lot of things" says Richard
Kreckel, vice president of GiNaC's PR department. "Competing
closed-source systems like Mathematica and Maple must be considered
obsolete now and will surely soon fall into oblivion -- Macsyma
already has." Asked whether GiNaC can really compete with all the
fancy features and gimmicks found in those systems he replied: "Hey,
there is always room for version 2.0 and the next generation!"

Alexander Frink, vice president of GiNaC's sales department, could not
be reached for a statement. He was reckoned to be busy encashing
donations from millions of joyous users overwhelmed with enthusiasm.
GiNaC is free software and licensed under the GNU general public
license (GPL).

"Having a truly scalable symbolic system is going to solve many of
todays problems" says Christian Bauer, vice president of the research
and development department. "Applications range from pure maths and
physics over geological surveys, long-term stock options and wheather
forecasts to such fields as wine-making and Japanese cuisine." The
newly released version 1.0 contains "absolutely no significant changes
relative to the last version whatsoever" according to Bauer. Asked
how he sees further development he crypticly proclaimed "We are simply
going to do what we did with the Macintosh: We emulate all other
systems, including their bugs."

Instructions how to download and install GiNaC on a computer system
can be found at <http://www.ginac.de/Download.html>. Also, it comes
pre-bundled with several distributions of the popular Linux operating
system as well as with FreeBSD. Because of this dominant position on
the consumers' computer desktops the US department of justice (DOJ) is
considering filing an antitrust law-suit. "Okay, Microsoft got away
with this practice, but we are not going to tolerate imitators", said
DOJ attorney general John Ashcroft at a meeting with press.
Germany's foreign minister Joschka Fischer delayed his trip to meet
Palestinian president Jassir Arafat to stop in Mainz and congratulate
the GiNaC folks for their release on behalf of Germany's chancellor
Gerhard Schroeder. IT-industry friendly Mr. Schroeder was said to be
busy "getting the beast installed" on his PC. "This new release is
going to have a tremendous impact on global stability" Mr. Fischer
said. "We have observed how politicians and suspected terrorists
alike have become addicted to GiNaC and been converted to coding
machines -- in a noble sense. Wherever they find a PC they start
emitting mesmeric steams and then the miracle of code generation
happens."

Many of us in the New York area remember Eric S. Raymond speaking at
the Twin Towers in November 1999. If you were there that night, you
probably remember three things: a packed auditorium, an engaging talk,
and an incredible view. The day the Towers were destroyed, ESR wrote a
short essay, Decentralism Against Terrorism.

Please join us, on Monday, November 12, when ESR will be presenting a
talk based on this essay, which touches on Eric's views on terrorism,
government, and the bearing of arms, followed by a period of questions
from the audience.

It will be a packed, engaging, and exciting evening for all of us.
Arrive early, and be sure to RSVP (Subject: RSVP - NYLUG - NOV -

From: Emile van Bergen <e-advies@evbergen.xs4all.nl>
Subject: OpenRADIUS v0.8
Date: Sun, 11 Nov 2001 19:30:35 CST

I'm pleased to announce the release of OpenRADIUS v0.8, a versatile,
flexible and powerful RADIUS server. This is the first public release.

Highlights:

* Allows you to use external data sources for anything:

  - shared secrets
  - accounts and passwords
  - profiles
  - session database
  - proxing table (proxing is not available yet)
  - NAS / dialed nr. ACLs
  - accounting storage
  - and much more

* Design is based on a versatile and powerful external module interface:

  - uses pre-spawned subprocesses and pipes for communication, so you
    can implement modules in any language that supports Unix pipe I/O;
  - both ASCII and binary interfaces available, protocol is fully
    documented;
  - much more efficient than spawn-upon-request type interfaces.

* Behaviour is fully configurable using built-in business rule language:

  - has full control over the request- and reply list;
  - strong-typed but has both automatic and explicit type conversion;
  - rich set of overloaded operators (eg. / on integer is division, / on
    IP address is CIDR masking).

* Contains a flexible dictionary that supports:

  - addressing the fixed protocol fields as normal attributes
  - receiving AND sending all types of oddball vendor-specific attribute
    definitions, multiple VSAs inside one encapsulating attribute, 2-
    and 4-octet attribute nrs., etc.

* The server itself and a number of standard external modules are made
  available under the GNU General Public License.

See: http://www.xs4all.nl/~evbergen/openradius/index.html for more
information.

From: ERDI Gergo <cactus@cactus.rulez.org>
Subject: Guikachu 0.98.1: GNOME Resource editor for PalmOS projects
Date: Sun, 11 Nov 2001 19:30:47 CST

Dear users of both large and small computing tools,

A new release of Guikachu is available.

About Guikachu
==============
Guikachu is a GNOME application for graphical editing of resource
files for PalmOS-based pocket computers. The user interface is
modelled after Glade, the GNOME UI builder.

Catch it all from http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/guikachu/

Features
========
* libXML-based I/O
* Exporting to PilRC .rcp files (compile with pilrc -H)
* String resources
* Dialog resources
* Menu resources
* Form resources
* Per-application resources (e.g. version number, icon)
* Form editor, with 100% accurate preview and graphical drag & drop
  capability to make designing forms more easier and faster
* Native font support in the form editor for more precise
  preview
* XSLT style sheets and shell script to generate RCP files from
  Guikachu documents

About this release
==================
A new 0.98 release, containing bug-fixes and documentation updates.

Changes:
        * Support for GCC 3.0 (this mostly means correct usage of the
          ::std namespace)
        * Bugfixes (as always). This includes a pretty severe bug that
          could cause Guikachu to crash when loading a file or
          starting from scratch.
        * Documentation updates (the build system is not put in place
          yet)

So, what does the future hold? The 0.98.x line will be for bugfixes,
and 0.99.0 will be the release candidate for 1.0. Of course, this all
means that everything is pretty much going to stay the same, so now is
a good time to work on the translations and the documentation.
http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/14820/2001/10/0/6922132/ has the
details.

Guikachu uses GTK-- and GNOME-- for its user interface. File I/O is
implemented with the libxml package. Dialog windows are loaded via
libglade. You will need the versions of these packages available in
the GNOME 1.4 bundle (with the exception of GNOME-- which you will
need to upgrade to version 1.2.0)
To actually create the PalmOS resource files, you will also need PilRC
(part of the GNU PalmOS SDK) to compile the .rpc files produced by
Guikachu.

Beware of bugémons!

From: Patrik =?ISO-8859-1?Q?R=E5dman?= <pradman@EGG.BACON.AND.SPAM.abo.fi>
Subject: sn 0.3.4 - Hassle-free Usenet news system for small sites.
Date: Sun, 11 Nov 2001 19:30:50 CST

sn 0.3.4 is now available at <http://www.iki.fi/patrik/sn/>.
This release fixes bugs and improves portability.

What it is
==========
sn is a small news system for small sites serving perhaps a few
dozen newsgroups, and with a slow connection to the internet.
It is similar to Leafnode (<http://www.leafnode.org/>).
The target user is a home or SOHO with a single modem connection
to the Internet, maybe running IP masq or similar, and serving a
few workstations.

sn is different
===============
sn is fast. The news fetcher implements command pipelining and
parallel fetches, so high modem latency doesn't cost you.
(You can also throttle sn down, if it's too fast).

sn is flexible. You can subscribe to newsgroups on several
upstream sites, and you can create local newsgroups that are not
propagated upstream. sn can make mailing lists look like newsgroups
transparently.

sn is non-intrusive. It has no configuration files, only control
files with simple semantics, so it's suited to being run in an
automated fashion.

sn is small. It batches 10 (default) articles per file, so
conserving inodes and reducing disk block fragments. sn can also
compress the article bodies. It aliases cross posts rather
than making separate copies. It does not maintain a bulky overview
database; instead it gets overview information directly from the
articles. Spool metadata is 5% to 10% of the total spool size,
even with compression. You don't need to build a separate file
system just to spool news.

sn doesn't have to be set up for the system. You can use it
privately, and your users can maintain their own news spool without
building sn.

sn has limitations
==================
Because the news spool is in an unconventional format, news readers
can read news locally only via NNTP.

IHAVE is not supported. Use POST instead.

sn has no idea of distributions.

sn can't handle thousands of newsgroups. A hundred is comfortable.

The method sn uses to alias cross posts is similar to filesystem
symlinks rather than hard links, in that if the original article is
expired, the alias breaks.

sn doesn't know how to filter spam.

Newsgroup names are subject to the same length limitations as any
filename.

Requirements
============
sn is beta. It should work on most UNIXish systems, as long as the GNU
tools are installed. (Tested on Linux (main development platform),
Solaris and FreeBSD.) If it runs on your machine, let me know. Or if it
doesn't run.

You need libz if you decide to compile in the compression feature.
It looks like most Linux distributions include libz.so, but not
always zlib.h or zconf.h. If yours doesn't have these 2 include
files and you want compression you'll need to get them.

You'll need inetd or tcpserver (<http://freshmeat.net/projects/ucspi-tcp/>)
to run the daemon. If you use inetd you will probably also want tcpd
(tcp wrappers).

License
=======
Distribution of sn is covered by the GNU GPL. See file COPYING.
Use of sn is not restricted. No express or implied warranty of
fitness for any purpose (but I'm still interested in bug reports
and comments).

History
=======
sn was created by Harold Tay <harold-sn at nb dot com sot sg> and maintained by him
until version 0.3.2. From 0.3.3 onwards, sn is maintained by
Patrik Rĺdman <patrik at iki dot fi>. For details see the CHANGES file.

=======================================================================

Many of us in the New York area remember Eric S. Raymond speaking at
the Twin Towers in November 1999. If you were there that night, you
probably remember three things: a packed auditorium, an engaging talk,
and an incredible view. The day the Towers were destroyed, ESR wrote
a short essay, Decentralism Against Terrorism.

Please join us, on Monday, November 12, when ESR will be presenting a
talk based on this essay, which touches on Eric's views on terrorism,
government, and the bearing of arms, followed by a period of questions
from the audience.

It will be a packed, engaging, and exciting evening for all of us.
Arrive early, and be sure to RSVP (Subject: RSVP - NYLUG - NOV -
your-first-and-last-name).

"Linux is subversive. Who would have thought even five years ago
(1991) that a world-class operating system could coalesce as if by
magic out of part-time hacking by several thousand developers
scattered all over the planet, connected only by the tenuous strands
of the Internet?" - Eric S. Raymond
