Are you only using bar numbers at the start of each system?  If so,
then you'll probably get better results by leaving the
Bar_number_engraver in the Score context and tweaking 'bound-details
for TextSpanner so it's never near the bar number:

\override TextSpanner #'(bound-details left-broken end-on-note) = ##t
