The problem is either a kernel or glibc thing that was happening a few
versions ago.  It doesn't happen with 0.81 for sure.  The call to
gethostbyname() when starting the tcp server caused an infinite loop in
the kernel sending hostname lookup requests.  I have no idea why, but it
was fixed in 0.81.
