    foodgroups: shuffle load_groups()
    
    - don't allocate the group-target name in add_group_instance();
      instead return either NULL or the new connection and let caller
      allocate if/when needed
    
    - in load_groups() merge three loops implementing the merge into one;
      mainly so that ...
    
    - in load_groups(), check add_group_instance()'s return value and,
      when NULL, toss the foodgroup instance (already logged); else clone
      connection's name
