There appears to be no documentation at all on how to get LEAF running
on a PI, tarball or not. The way I understand it it is using uboot from
a Raspbian diestibution, not at all satisfactory...

And as you said previously, LEAF is not restricted to firewalls, so
whatever one decides to use it for, it would be beneficial to know how
to just get the bloody thing running at all.
