In theory you can index any attribute, however the
problem is that you need to also specify a matching rule
in order to be able to search (and thus use the index).

As I use an X500 backend I am not entirely aware of how
to do this in the context of slapd.

The ldap server that my customer has used for a number of years 
is the ISODE code with an ldap umich interface and 
introducing non-standard attributes with specific
matching rules is not a task to be undertaken lightly.

i.e. I would like to search by "department"
attribute
or by any attribute for that matter
